The article says that the event in question is regarding his time as DC on Butch Davis’ staff at Miami. He was only there in 1999-2000. However, in 1999, Miami was 3-3 heading into an October 23rd game at Alumni. The Canes won that game (apparently thanks to a sports psychologist). On an aside, the 1999 season was won of those typical TOB seasons where we beat ND but lost to Temple and couldn’t put away the U when their season was clearly on the ropes.

All that said, the amusing part about CHOP is that it didn’t come from some admired coach or experience. It was handed over by a therapist to help a group of defeatists. In a lot of ways, it explains why Rutgers was so willing to adopt.

What's better: #CHOP or #BoxEmIn?

I'd argue #CHOP.

BC and :toby were beating the Canes at home 28-0. A true frosh by the name of William Green was beating the shit out of them. And then, they lost the game. I remember. I was in a Las Vegas sportsbook all weekend. I couldn't believe my fucking eyes. Chris Hovan looked like he was about to have a heart attack. O'Brien has never beaten Miami.

2002, :toby was hosting a radio show before the season opener. They were going to play @Miami 3rd game of the season. I knew that BC would open 2-0 so I refused to even mention those games and I went right to Miami (the then defending national champion.) I was the first caller in queue, I dialed in 30 minutes before they took callers. I KNEW no one would ask him a challenging question so I point blank mentioned the 1999 game (and everyone got real quiet in the studio) and asked the man, coach, what can you do to make sure that doesn't happen again? I put him right on the spot. I couldn't believe that the show screeners didn't remove me from the call list right there but O'Brien was actually very cool about my interrogation. He just said look, they recruit better players, they are the defending national champions, and we have to go down to Coral Gabbles this year and give them hell. We are going to play as hard as we can and I am going to do everything I can to prevent a repeat of 1999 and also, 2001. He never said specifically what he would do differently, just that he would work hard to make sure that it didn't happen again. The host said over and over, he appreciated my passion and wanted more callers to ask questions like that. I was actually surprised.

I think the 1999 loss to Temple (BC's first year back to a Bowl since the gambling scandal) is what got us all started on the concept of the annual "WTF-loss" that we would grow to expect each year from :toby.

I don't think the 28-0 Canes game loss had William Green. I recall Cedric Washington fumbled near mid-field with BC up 28-0 in the 3rd. My friend turned to me and said "we're about to lose". I could be wrong though.

From HJS's link

On BC's next possession, John Matich kicked a 44-yard field goal but was knocked down by linebacker Chris Campbell. The Eagles took the three points off the scoreboard and, after Carlton Rowe's two carries brought it to the 2, William Green went in to make it 14-0.

Green played as a true frosh and contributed. But it was mostly Cedric Washington.

Either way, no excuse to lose a game like that. You are up 28-0, if you lose, people need to be fired.
