How so? USC has been trying to run some variation of an air raid offense since The Poodle departed. It has not worked out well for them. On top of which, Riley is the guy getting eclipsed by his poorer in state rival despite massive advantages against the rest of the conference excluding Texas. He'll be fine in the talent bereft Pac 12, but anyone who thinks he is going to stand USC up into a position where they can go toe to toe with the top of the SEC is kidding themselves. He basically ran away from becoming an also, also ran in the SEC.

If USC was willing to pay $11 million that money would have been better spent trying lure Urban Meyer back from the NFL or a guy like Matt Rhule. They could have gotten Dave Aranda or Cristobal for less than $11 million and both are objectively better than Riley.

The Tennessee faction of my highly dysfunctional ancestry is having a shotguns-in-the-air meltdown about Heupel to OU. Didn't OU fire him from a position coach job a few years ago?

OU has a bunch of 5 and 4 star skill position commits for the next two years out of SoCal. Riley’s been recruiting the ayy to ea already.

Maybe we shouldn’t be terribly quick in showing Hafley the door. Dr. Kraft’s Rod Carey was just fired at Temple.

Lincoln Riley has never lost more than 2 games in a year. Mike Gundy has done that twice in the last 16 years in 2010 and 2011.

Even easier because you don't have to displace any earth - just check it in and it'll be skeletonized within hours or the thermocline will suck it down and no one will find it. 9/10 people who might will spear it with a hook, tie the hook to a tree, and use it as free gator bait for hunting.

Good news for ND is that Gruden is available and would accept the job if offered, according to my sources.

With Brian Kelly going to LSU...and his track record with student videographers...certainly gives new meaning to "Death Valley".

Given how affected Louisiana is during hurricane season, you may need to put the hurricane warning/tropical storm warning flags ON the scissor-lifts with Kelly down there now.

Christmas came early for Notre Dame fans today. Kelly is a good coach, but he is definitely not a great coach and he wasn’t going to get any better. I am stunned that LSU made this hire. There is zero chance Kelly could ever go toe to toe with Saban and the truth is that he is rarely, if ever, going to beat Fisher or Smart. I would have thought LSU would have immediately hired Aranda when Riley gave them the stiff arm, but here we are. My guess is that Oklahoma will go after Aranda and that Fickel lands at Notre Dame.

Strange to think that Oklahoma and Notre Dame are no longer destination jobs where coaches enjoying success go looking for greener pastures. Oklahoma is understandable in the sense that in heading to the SEC they look to be on a collision course with becoming like their old rival Nebraska—a bad to mediocre also ran in a conference in which they don’t fit. At least in Notre Dame’s case the departed was a coach that no one at the school was in love with and who was disliked by a not insignificant portion of the fan base, and who had little room for any further growth or development.

There is also a reckoning coming for college football if schools are going to pay absurd sums for non-championship level coaches like Riley, Kelly or Tucker. A lot of schools that were hanging by a thread are not going to be able to keep up—including our own alma mater.

Kelly feels like ND's version of the TOB departure. Successful coach who feels unappreciated going for what seems like easier recruiting grounds.

Sounds like Tommy Rees is getting a long look in a “save the class” move. I don’t expect a lot of ND recruits/players to leave. They picked ND for ND and not because of Kelly. But, it sure sounds like Buchner is going to follow wherever Rees goes.

It's amusing to imagine Hafley getting hired by Notre Dame and wiping the dust off of the speech about how important and special it is to be at a Catholic school.

Especially with Aranda, a guy who had enormous success at LSU as a DC, sitting there at Baylor. The more I think about this, the more flabbergasted I am by this hire. Any halfway decent replacement hire at Notre Dame will be able to match Kelly's output over a decade. It is a much different job then the one Kelly took over--the facilities are superior to any in the country--including all of the SEC Baby Rapists and Oregon, and they tweaked the admissions bar a bit downward--they still can't take some of the complete illiterates that the SEC (excepting Vandy) can take, but 99.9% of the recruiting pool is available (basically what they wouldn't give Meyer which lead to him taking the Florida job), and Swarbrick has set up the schedule going forward very strategically so that a competent coach can consistently win 10 or 11 games every year and be considered for the CFP on a yearly basis. Basically the facilities and program infrastructure are as good as anywhere--its the one thing that Swarbrick and Kelly did correctly.

Getting someone with Kelly's coaching chops should be a layup. The real test is if they can identify and land someone who can take the next step and build the program back to where it was under Holtz. I have significant doubts that Swarbrick will be able to do that, but if he brings in Fickel or Campbell or probably even Freeman, he isn't going to be worse off than he was with Kelly.

Also, there is no way Rees is getting the job. If they go internal it will be Freeman. And they are not worried about the recruiting class falling apart because Kelly left. No one came to Notre Dame for Kelly. No one. Freeman might be a different story, and Kelly is apparently trying to hire him for LSU, but if Freeman is a contender for the HC job--and all the smoke signals indicate he is the one internal hire possibility--then they should be able to hold him long enough that the class largely stays put.
