I never knew being sincere was being "Godly."
You were being sincere when you said you would've attended the Naval Academy if not for Teddy Kennedy's lack of endorsement? I thought you were doing a bit.
I would have attended the Naval Academy (or Air Force Academy) if I had gotten an appointment. That appointment never came.
A nomination is not the same thing as an appointment. I had four shots to get Naval Academy/Air Force Academy nominations: President Reagan, Senator Kerry, Drunk Murderer, and Congressman Donnelly. I didn't waste my time asking the President, I didn't get the 1600 on the SATs. I wasn't Mark Zuckerberg. So I was stuck with a drunk murderer, Kerry, and Donnelly trying to get an appointment to a service academy in the second most competitive state in the country (second only to New Jersey.) When I visited my congressman's office in Quincy, transcripts in hand, I met my "competition." Onyx, it was like, they ALL had straight-As, National Honor Society! Because my teachers in Abington were tough on us (no grade inflation at Abington, our Valedictorian, she only had a 3.62 GPA) I didn't have a chance. Now, my SAT scores were probably stronger than theirs (I actually scored higher than my high school valedictorian.) But my congressman told me that actually might work against me because they are wise to that at Annapolis (they would just have assumed that with a 750 math, I should have pulled straight-As but didn't because I was lazy and didn't work at it.) He told me that he could only nominate 10 and they only take ONE! That's it. Only one appointment goes from each of the 435 house reps to each Academy. Those were the rules. So he strongly recommended that I get Kerry or Kennedy to nominate me because they got to each nominate 50 (or so) and 5 each get appointments. And even then, congressman Donnelly didn't nominate me (yet.)
So a couple months go by, I don't have any nominations. I get the letters from both Senators, NOPE! Sorry, your scores are not good enough to be among their "50", then I get a telegram. My Congressman nominated me to the Air Force Academy and not the Naval Academy. This was January, and I was devastated and my parents were pissed because now (they know) if I don't get into the Air Force Academy they have to pay for tuition and they have NO MONEY. So they told me, basically, I'm fucked.
March, I get another telegram from Congressman Donnelly. He
did nominate me. He told me that I was the "tenth" and his final Naval Academy nomination but given the other nine he gave (and seeing their transcripts), he said it would be a miracle if Annapolis OR Colorado Springs appointed me. They didn't. It was just too competitive.
I admired my congressman. He was honest with me (even if it was hurtful.) He actually took the time to talk with each of us. In talking with his office staff, the reason why he spent so much of his limited time on this (I never met Senator Uncle-Drunkle or Kerry) is because he was a high school teacher. That is what he job was before he was my congressman. So spending so much time talking to a bunch of 17 year olds about their desire to get appointments, he took that very seriously. He didn't just delegate that to his office staff in Quincy.
Onyx, I didn't want to have to "ask" drunk murderer for a nomination. But I felt I had to because my congressman recommended that I do it because ouor Senators get to appoint more than one candidate. So I only needed one nomination BUT I WANTED THREE. If I had gotten THREE nominations (both Senators and my house rep) that would have increased my chances of getting an appointment.
Please do not make me explain all this again.
