(Way Too Early) 2017 Predictions

Postby dtwalrus on Thu Dec 01, 2016 11:13 am

OOC
vs. Notre Dame - 4-8 in 2016, but playing a tough schedule and with W's over teams that probably would've beaten us this year...or did...
@ Northern Illinois - 5-7 in 2016 with losses to Wyoming, WIU (??), Toledo, C. Michigan...Not the N.Illinois of 2014...
@ UConn - 3-9 in 2016, with wins over Cincinnati, UVa and Maine (barely)...
vs. Central Michigan - 6-6 in 2016, and aside from a win over OKST, thoroughly unimpressive...

The fact that we're not playing an FCS team may earn us some credit when the strongest vs. weakest schedules discussion starts up in the spring, but the combined 18-30 record of our OOC opponents should mean that we once again have one of the easiest OOC schedules in the country. 3-1 should be the minimum expectation.

ACC
vs. FSU - No chance
@ Clemson - No chance
@ Louisville - No chance
vs. VT - Slight chance
vs. NCST - Winnable
vs. Wake - Winnable
@ Syracuse - Winnable
@ UVa - Winnable

Considering that we're essentially writing off Clemson, Louisville and FSU these days, it's actually probably good that 2 of those games are on the road. After all, what's the difference between losing 54-7 at home vs. losing 73-0 on the road. NCST and Wake at home should both be very winnable. UVa and Syracuse on the road should both still be winnable and getting UVa as the Coastal Crossover is always a blessing. VT at home, despite the disaster of this year, should at least be within reach. Overall, 3 ACC wins should be considered the bare minimum, 4 should be the expectation, and 5 would be a minor miracle.

My early gut reaction says 7-5 (4-4) with the possibility of upsetting Notre Dame or VT to get to 8 wins, but more likelihood of blowing one or two games against 'Cuse, Wake, NCST, or UVa and finishing at 6-6 (3-5). Honestly, it would take massive effort to not be bowl eligible in 2017 with the schedule. Unfortunately, Daz seems to be putting effort into disappointing the fan base...

We would be stuck with Addaziani for what would feel like forever. Leahy may give him another extension and give him the "we are who awe are award."

When Maryland was replaced by Louisville BC should have pushed to have UVA as a rival and let Louisville have VT. Rivalry games should be winnable most years if not all. As it stands Louisville gets a cupcake rival, BC and UVA get rivals they might upset from time to time but most often will lose to. Also BC has more in common as an institution with UVA than VT.

I feel like this team is going to look a LOT like this year. What's going to change? Brown's tape reminds me a lot of Jeff Smith's. Can't imagine he's the answer. We are so fucking thin at QB

It'll be a lot different! We're so close going into next year. We just need:
1) The OL to get better with experience.
B) Either a good transfer or an inexperience youth to step up at QB.
iii) The defense not to take a step back.
Four) Daz to start learning from his mistakes or yield more game management to assistants.

Walrus - Are you operating under the assumption that Landry is back? I'm not so sure he's coming back, and the team losing their best player doesn't make me any more optimistic about next year.

0-and-12.

Addazio will one day have a humorous entry in the BC Wiki page

Next year, Buffalo, Wagner and UMass are not on the schedule.

i actually think n ill is harder than ND. he will bring out all the tricks to beat ND.

and i also think landry is definitely gone.

Yes. I've seen no reason to think a 2nd team all ACC junior who would likely be a 3rd-7th round pick doesn't return for his senior season to improve his draft stock.

I haven't seen anything to suggest otherwise. Have you?

This does not lead me to think the Great Daziani and Co. will have a successful campaign in 2017

5-7 with as many blow outs as wins.

3-1 OOC with a blowout loss to ND.

2-6 ACC

Why are you saying a freshman QB. Wade is going to be a Junior. I have no reason to think he's going to leave. Addazio already showed faith in him making him starting QB in '15, there is no reason to assume he's going to transfer as of now.

With a 5th year transfer QB, 7-6.

Without... 5-7.

Re: (Way Too Early) 2017 Predictions

6-6 is the most likely scenario.

There will be the 5 losses out of the shoot:
ND
VT
Louisville
FSU
Clemson

3 wins
NIU
UConn
CMU

4 toss ups
Wake
NCST
UVA
Syr

If they go 3-1 in the tossups they are 6-6, if they split they are 5-7, they win out they are 7-5 and if they hit all the numbers, they win out and knock off one of the forecasted losses they will end up 8-4 and in the Pinstripe Bowl again. There is a ceiling on this program of 8 wins max and one can only hope for 9-10 wins when the conference is really down. Given that the ACC powers do not want to touch realignment or balanced scheduling, the program's, from purely a record standpoint, uptick is not much higher. The business plan is to play 4 very beatable OOC opponents and split in the conference. It's a fraudulent 8-4 record and the fact that they will lose more bowl games than win over time will likely bear that out. A really successful season is a Tier 1 bowl appearance in the current ACC bowl set up (Pinstripe, Belk Charlotte, Sun Bowl or Music City). A contract extension will be given the coach that can lead them to the Orange, Russell Athletic or some NY6 bowl. getting into the playoff will never, ever happen in the current format. Therefore, if the program will never make the playoff, I have always felt that they should play a crazy OOC schedule and play everyone and anyone in P5. It will make the schedule better and excite the fan base. But what the hell do I know.

Just for fun, the schedule as we know it.

9/1 - @ N.Illinois - Yeah, cupcake! Yeah, no labor day home game!
9/8 - [ACC/BYE] - Think I would prefer @ Louisville, @ Clemson or FSU here. Maybe catch them early. At the very least, take the loss and save the meaningful (i.e. winnable) games for later in the year when the offense is (hopefully) coming together
9/15 - Notre Dame - Hopefully they still suck.
9/22 - [ACC/BYE] - Come on, ACC Cupcake to build some momentum...
9/29 - C. Michigan
10/7 - [ACC/BYE]
10/14 - [ACC/BYE]
10/21 - [ACC/BYE]
10/28 - [ACC/BYE]
11/4 - [ACC/BYE]
11/11 - [ACC/BYE]
11/18 - @ UConn - Win number 5?
11/25 - Syracuse (?) or [ACC/BYE] - Back to the year-end-rivalry game? There was some blow-back with Wake being scheduled this year...

Let's face it, only Syracuse, Wake, NCST, UVa and maybe VT are winnable in ACC play. A good schedule would feature these games in that large block of ACC games in October, later in the year with the offense finding itself and hopefully with one of them after a bye week. A bad schedule would be cupcakes early, which opens the door to an unsettled offense under Wade/Brown blowing our only opportunity at a bowl before the end of October.
