We're Going Bowling!

Postby DrJackRyan on Tue Nov 22, 2016 1:03 pm

In the event of an “insufficient number of deserving teams,” the NCAA allows room for schools that have five wins plus a multiyear football Academic Progress Rate score high enough for postseason play.

BC is one of 18 teams a win away from being bowl-eligible. (Army has won six games, but two were against FCS opponents, and it still needs a win over Navy to become eligible). Of those teams, nine are favored to win this weekend, which could leave seven bowl spots for 5-7 teams.

With a 981 APR, BC would easily qualify. The only five-win teams in the country with higher APRs are Vanderbilt (990) and North Texas (984). Duke is sitting on a 4-7 record with a 995 APR, but it goes into Miami as a 15-point underdog.

Saw the same article. Although good for the program to get another game in there are way too many bowl games. The NCAA, and probably TV as well, has ruined New Years Day.

If selected for a bowl and Towles starts how may members of this board will be throwing golf balls or similar objects at their TV's?
Yes I am a BC fan. Proof of this is my dog's name is Baldwin.

The game, and who starts it, is irrelevant. The bowl is good to get Wade and Brown 3 weeks of extra practice.

The game is dumb and they should reward the seniors, including Towles. Daywalking ginger used to turn to pages 3-5 of the Deep Sea Playbook, and we always got one game of seeing what BC was actually capable of on offense when their coach wasn't a pussy.

A 5-7 bowl would be the worst of the worst bowl game. You think Detroit is a toilet bowl, just wait. And given that it would likely be a significant financial hit considering how poorly the fan base travels when we actually have a fan base, are actually playing decent football, and are actually playing a decent team in a decent bowl, I actually think that we'd consider not going if it's something like the Bahamas Bowl in front of 500 fans against Middle Tennessee. Extra practices or not.

This was always a treat. You'd see more deep passes, screens and misdirection in the bowl game than you would see the entire season.

You are delusional if you think we would even consider for a millisecond turning down the bowl.

Travel costs for that are equal to like 3.75 scholarships on the BC books.

Both Texas and ND declined 5-7 bowls in the last few years. It was "beneath them." And that's with all the money in the world where they can take the financial hit. The administration is allergic to all financial hits and you think it's a guarantee that we'll take one go play Podunk University in a bowl game most fans don't know about and aren't going to watch?

I'm not saying we definitely turn it down, but you're crazy to think we're definitely accepting a 5-7 bowl.

There will be pressure from the ACC to accept and BC will cave. They don't have the clout of ND or Texas.

This will be the absolute bare minimum any team has done to make a bowl, right? A 1-7 conference season with losses of 38, 45, 46 and 49. Four OOC wins over a 2-9 MAC team, a 2-9 kicked OUT of the MAC team, a 3-8 Conference USA team, and a 1-AA. One conference win in two full seasons.

There's no way Daz turns down a chance to gloat about making a bowl and proving all the negative fans (and that kid Sully) wrong.

Semi-legit bowl chatter - If BC wins, Military will take BC over Wake.

If BC loses, complete open market with BC pushing for a bowl post-Christmas because of exams and ESPN will try to accommodate because of the ratings.

There was a discussion on twitter that NY might be in play at 6 wins

Doesn't the ACC split bowl money, so travel costs aren't an issue?

We had a great time in NYC a couple of years ago, and I'd be interested in going to Annapolis, but there's no way I can support Daz this year.

Amendment to what I said earlier, I'm assuming NC State loses for Military. Unless something weird happens, I don't see Pinstripe passing Pitt.

If both BC and NC State lose, likely Quick Lane. If BC loses and NC State wins, St. Pete.

These are all the teams that have not already clinched a bowl berth OR wouldn't make it ahead of us if we both had 5 wins (I.e. I didn't include Vandy because if Vandy doesn't make a bowl, we aren't either without beating Wake):

Image

Note that Akron already lost, so there are now 84 teams playing for 80 spots.

These are the teams above us, either with 6 wins already or who will make it over us with 5 wins:

Army needs another win since they have two wins over FCS teams, but, again, even if they lose, they would make it in over us if we had 5 wins.

A 5-7 BC team would be the last pick after the rest of the Big 5 and the Academies. However, there could be a mod-major picked over us based on location of a bowl. I think we will get an invite, but... if you don't want it to be Camden on December 10th, just beat a terrible Wake team (like you should have vs Cuse and GT).

BTW... here in lies my biggest problem with Daz. He is not a good enough recruiter (decent) to overcome his terribleness as a coach (worst in Power 5). BC needs someone who gives us a net advantage over the opponent. Either being a sick recruiter and a marginal tactician or a decent recruiter but incredible coach (developing talent and Xs/Os) (so long as Leahy is controlling the purse strings, BC will never have someone who is good at both).

There are worse coaches than Daz in the P5. See Doreen, Dave or Strong, Charlie.
