retiring matt and luke's jerseys

Postby angrychicken on Tue Jul 05, 2016 3:15 pm

They're retiring the numbers of Matt Ryan and Luke Keuchly. That should fix the mess that is going on in Chestnot Hill.

I am not in favor of this. I can possibly see the argument for retiring Keuchly's number, but definitely not Ryan's. I think winning a conference championship should be a prerequisite for getting one's number retired.

This is very much a FSG move reminiscent of a couple years ago when they were trying to keep the sellout streak going. So many great games to choose from on this schedule to boot.

I agree with this. They absolutely deserve it.

If you win a major award for being the best at your position, then your number should be retired.

True according to this http://bceagles.com/news/2016/7/5/footb ... mbers.aspx
but it would not surprise me if they do not understand the difference.

i figure if the jerseys are important enough to retire, they probably deserve their own thread as well.

we'll leave the other thread for the old news changes that must be coming 7/1/2017

the retiring of jerseys is really just hanging a memento of each of them on the wall. this may even help the empty stadium look less empty.

i bet the play for buttcut is to get them both back on campus to ask each for a check to help fund the planning stages of the indoor practice barn

Right. Despite some misleading headlines on other sites/news sources, I understand that only the jerseys are being hung; this does not mean the numbers are being retired. Thus I believe that what BC is doing is a good thing.

You could be onto something. Instead of retiring just the jersey, we should have Luke Kuechly and Matt Ryan statues sitting in the stands.

Previously, Boston College has retired the numbers of Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Doug Flutie and Outland Trophy winner Mike Ruth and the jerseys of eight other standouts: Art Donovan, Bill Flynn, Gene Goodreault, Mike Holovak, Lou Montgomery, Charles O'Rourke, Tony Thurman and Louis Urban.

It seems that the press release understands the distinction. Let's hope Bates does as well.

in fairness to buttcut, at least he knows not to invite himself in to the hall of fame...

I meant to say jersey.

What is the criteria for having your number retired? Winning the Heisman surely, but for other positions?
