The 900k thing, if true, is ridiculous. If anything the league should be paying GT.

As for Fenway, hard pass on that in back to back years. I actually didn't mind it vs ND, but doing it too often will kill it (and doing it vs Yukon will just be a waste, it's a non-starter).

Paying GT 900k to play in Ireland doesn't make sense. What does it mean that it is for BC to be the home team? Are they getting a certain share of the revenue that GT isn't?

Buttcut should be snipped for just for paying 900k to GT alone.

this is a good post

$900k to lose a home game? good job, good effort bates

i will say turning down uconn at fenway might've been bates' best move in his 3+ years here, which says something

1. We should not be playing Yukon in football;
B. The Bradster did something right.

Order of priority:

1. All homes games on campus
2. all home games on campus, except uconn at fenway
3. all home games on campus, except GT @ ireland and cutting them a $900,000 check
4. all home games on campus, except uconn at fenway and GT @ ireland and cutting them a $900,000 check

The 900k to GT is somewhat misleading. The visitor always gets paid. Since the Irish promoters came to us first, we probably worked with them and ESPN to find an opponent. The 900k is more like a guarantee and cost coverage for GT. They get some upside too.

jhiggi02 {l Wrote}:Yukon at fenway would have been a major waste. We should use the Fenway game to lure a solid out of conference P5 school to play us, not a crappy AAC team that is dying to play us.

This is spot on. Fenway is a cool niche, but done too much, will get old. despite this game being Yukons Super Bowl, it won't move the needle for BC wherever it is. Having it at Fenway would just give the mouth breathers more reason to come out of the woodwork.

If Fenway wants to generate revenue so badly, get UMass to play a game there. Aren't they independent now, so it's safe to assume they'll have a decent schedule of power teams looking for free wins that would be a great draw at Fenway. I thought Yukon was trying to be a new borough of NY, why don't they just stick to playing Army at Yankee Stadium in front of 15k fans and go away.

I also don't understand why this is even a story. I've had like 3 separate articles pop up in my google news feed. The reasoning is fairly sound and as many have said, this is probably one of Bates best decisions to date

Hohler is such a hack. He can't help himself. The facts in that article are bad enough, didn't need the amateurish inflammatory writing. He probably things it is a "hook" or some such shit.

If there is one thing that the Red Sox know how to do, it is market and make money. If FSG is not helping BC, it is because BC cannot be helped. Period.

This. Hohler is doing message boardery in the Globe.

Thank God Bates declined this offer. The team needs every advantage it can scrape up.

Marketing the Red Sox and marketing BC are two different animals. The Red Sox brand markets itself. Marketing BC takes actual work and ideas.

The Red Sox brand wasn't remotely close in 2001 to what it is now in 2016. The only thing more amazing than what the marketing team at Yawkey has done to the Sox brand is what they did to that piece of shit ballpark to make it at least close to worth attending.

They were selling out before they won the title. This argument is pretty much ended with the words "pink hats."

If you are around the Stadium and Boston for more than a couple of hours, you realize what a genius marketing team they have. Even the local grumpy old men sportswriters acknowledge that the Sox could sell you your own car, though they say it as a negative.

Bands selling out Fenway this summer, you should check one out. Heard there was a football game there once as well.

Point taken.

However, if that is the case, what has FSG done (and apparently failed at) to market BC? I don't know. I'm asking because their name gets thrown around every once in a while and I want to know how they earn their money.
