ILikeBC {l Wrote}:So Edmonds is supposed to go down next week. New Plex is apparently going to be amazing. It will include a raised indoor track that is somehow modeled after the marathon route, including a mini heartbreak hill.

The football facility is apparently going to be more of an airplane hangar. However, the football weight room will be moved to the indoor facility.

Has the wrecking ball done the job on Edmonds or is Bates whistling Dixie?

i was there this weekend and it was still up

Makes sense that they would wait until after reunion. I hope the 5 years gave it a good send off.

Another missed opportunity by BC. They should have imploded it during reunion weekend. Sell tickets for a huge outdoor cocktail party, and at the end of the night, blow it up. Maybe have a Great White concert and burn it down. :shrug

ILikeBC {l Wrote}:This was posted on TOS. An athletics department press conference is scheduled for today, per BCEagles.com

Chestnut Hill, Mass. (2-22-16)—Boston College Athletics Director Brad Bates announced plans today for three projects to enhance intercollegiate, intramural and club sports at Boston College:a recreational center, athletics playing fields, and an athletics field house.

The initiatives, an investment of approximately $200 million, result from a multi-year assessment and planning effort regarding BC Athletics, as well as focused fundraising with alumni and friends of Boston College.

The recreational center, a 240,000 square-foot facility that will replace the Flynn Recreation Complex and be located at the site of Edmonds Hall on Thomas More Drive, will benefit all BC students, faculty and staff. Approved by the City of Boston in 2009 as part of the University’s Institutional Master Plan (IMP), the project will begin this summer after permits have been obtained. The center, made possible by a lead gift from Trustee Margot Connell and her family, will require two years for construction.

The University will also seek permitting for new baseball, softball and intramural fields on the Brighton Campus, which were also approved in the 2009 IMP.

Bates said that fundraising for both projects will continue throughout the process.

In addition, Bates stated that the University will begin discussions with Boston city officials regarding construction of an athletics field house that would be located adjacent to Alumni Stadium. This indoor facility, to be funded through private gifts, would provide much-needed space for varsity football and other field sports, as well as campus recreation, club sports, and intramurals.

Additional information about the new recreational complex, playing fields and athletics field house will be made available to the Boston College Allston-Brighton Community Task Force and local residents in a pre-filing meeting.

“These new facilities will provide benefits for all BC students and student-athletes,” said Bates. “We need the financial support of all of our alumni who have benefitted from their BC education to provide opportunities for the next generation of BC students. The athletics field house sets an example of what we can do when our alumni and friends offer their support for our athletics initiatives.

“We are excited for the future of BC Athletics.”

Can we get an update on this? I realize that Bates and Co. were busy putting together the much anticipated 2028 matchup with Stanford, but...

I understand they'll be using the half time show of this very Stanford game to kickoff the gala fundraiser that will eventually result in the much heralded practice facility.

It would be nice if we could get some start and completion dates from Bates instead of his vague BS. Our so called peers have no problem announcing a facilities upgrade with dates attached.

Not gonna happen. Bates has become a master of distraction. The announcement of these projects came just as the national media was just starting to pick up on the fact that BC hadn't won an ACC game in football and basketball in (at that time) almost a year. Two of the three projects had been approved years ago, so that wasn't really news. The third was news. Everyone has been calling for an indoor practice facility for years, so this was something that everyone could get behind. They even made renderings of this magical facility. The problem that I have with this is that there are no hard plans for this to go forward. They are beginning "discussions" with Boston city officials and with the neighborhood weirdos.

Here's what's going to happen: Bates will point to the destruction of Edmonds and the construction of the new facility there as evidence that these three projects that he has packaged together are moving forward. The problem with this is that this new facility has very little to do with the athletic department. Its construction has little effect on the programs that bring in the cash and the fans. As long as this building is under construction, Bates feels like he gets a free pass on the baseball/softball fields and the indoor practice facility. There will be no stated start date for the IPF coming from Brad Bates because it will be years before they will even consider starting it. There are too many excuses that they have given themselves: City of Boston, neighbors, not enough money raised, other construction projects, contrails. Smoke and mirrors.

with the small splash the baseball team made this year, i think the baseball fields are going to get a little more focus from the alums.

plus, there is no way to tie the baseball fields on brighton with the halfassed new plex on edmonds. if he tries to pull that shit, more than just the half dozen posters of this website will point out he has no clothes (and a haircut straight out of the 80s)
now in the street there is violence

Bates as a master of distraction made me spit my coffee. All four of us watching are still half annoyed by the football and basketball season and the fake facilities upgrade doesn't change that.

So it's been 5 months since this announcement. Any updates on the demolition of Edmonds and the construction of the new plex? How are the permits coming along for the new baseball and softball fields? How are those "discussions" going with the city officials? I haven't heard anything about any of this since February, but that's understandable. Bates has been pretty busy rolling out the new Twitter handles and overseeing the video of a guy sitting alone in a bar watching a BC game.
