Luke Kuechly ACC Defensive Back of the Week

Postby AguilaFan on Mon Nov 02, 2009 12:51 pm

GREENSBORO, N.C. - True freshman LB Luke Kuechly has been named the ACC Defensive Back of the Week, announced November 2.

Kuechly intercepted the first pass of his career and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown in the Eagles' 31-10 win against Central Michigan on Saturday. He also racked up a game high 11 tackles and anchored a defensive secondary that limited heralded Central Michigan QB Dan LeFevour to 152 passing yards and no touchdowns. The true freshman has led the Eagles in tackles in eight of nine games this season.

Kuechly leads the team with 58 solo tackles, 36 assisted stops and 94 total tackles. His two pass break ups and one fumble recovery are tied for the team lead and his seven tackles for a loss are second.

He will be ACC Defensive Player of the Year as a Freshman.

Why?

Look at all the horrible ACC defenses!

Oh yeah, he is a Yankee and we have the Swofcukford machine...sorry...mea culpa.

You're right, there are some atrocious ACC defenses this season (Miami, FSU, NC State, GT). None are as bad as the one in bold.

But there are at least two that I can think of that aren't bad at all (Clemson and UNC). I'm sure Swofford (a Hole, as you probably know) will give it to someone in pastel blue.

It's hard to imagine him having better stats the final 3 ACC games of the season but if he does - maybe a couple more picks then it will be hard to deny him accolades. All ACc first team as a freshman?

Headlines: Does Kuechly Have a Legit Shot at Winning ACC Defensive Player of the Year?

http://www.bcinterruption.com/2009/11/2/1111185/headlines-does-kuechly-have-a?ref=CBS&source=rss_teams_Boston_College_Eagles

Highlight

Kuechly added another accomplishment to his record last week, intercepting Chippewa QB Ryan Radcliff and scampering 28 yards for the touchdown. It was his first career touchdown at any level.

Kuechly’s 94 total tackles leads the ACC and ranks 6th nationally, as well as #1 in the country with 58 solo tackles. He has more than double the number of tackles than the second best Eagle (Marcellus Bowman with 43). Kuechly also have 7 tackles for loss, good for second on the team behind only Alex Albright’s 7.5 TFLs. Now Kuechly has added an interception and a touchdown to his already gaudy stats.

So my question is, should Kuechly be receiving some serious consideration for ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors?

IF BC plays 5 more games, Luke has a shot at the single season record of 165 set by new HOFer McManus. Even being conservative with 4 games played he could easily break into the top 10.
