2016 Recruiting Thread

For the love of God, can this staff pull some DTs? We have one in this class and not many others out there that seem to be high on BC at the moment. You'd think that it would be a priority considering Wujciak and Kelly leave after this year and Gutapfel leaves after next year.

L35 is correct. Going forward our DT's are very undersized. Merritt 6'0 268; Smith 6'1 264; Cohee 6'2 257. None of those 3 project to get up to 290/300. Korutz is 6'3" going into his senior year of high school, so he is the one most likely to get to the 290 range. Christian Wilkins would have been a huge addition to this roster.

I would wait to see how the OL situation shakes out as well. There is always the ability to move guys around if the numbers become out of whack. Austin Stevens is one that was flipped from DT to the OL this year and most kids coming out of HS play both sides of the ball.

Lifka - WTF? He gained weight and then couldn't play. Slotted on special teams; had a whopping 6 tackles last year, and was not asked back as a 5th year senior. The DT's are undersized and we should be adding 1 - 2 more. Deal with it.

I didn't argue we should add more. I think you don't understand that college linemen can gain 50 pounds easily if coaches wanted them to.

I don't think you understand that Lifka may have added 50 lbs., but he became too fat and too slow to see the field. Not everyone has the type of frame to add 50 lbs. of good weight, and I submit that Merritt, Smith and Cohee do not. We need to recruit a couple of big DT's.

I submit that you have no idea whether merritt or smith can gain that kind of weight or whether they need to in Browns system. Wujciak and guptafel were both 250 out of high school.

If it's all you have, fine, but you shouldn't be consistently relying on 270 pound DTs at this level. Look at FSU, Clem, and other ACC/SEC teams. Their DTs are typically in the 290-310 range.

I think in Brown's hybrid system having DTs in the 280 range will be somewhat common.

A few things. The S/C staff can 100% get these guys coming in ~250 lbs up to a weight to play DT if they need to. They put about 20+ pounds on Lindstrom from the time he enrolled early to the time the season kicked off. Look at the guys on the roster and the size they have put on in the short time they have been here. Cohee has gone from 240 in HS to 260 in a year. Vitiello went from 255 to 265 in a year. Noa Merritt has gone from 255 to 270 in a year.

In re: to Lifka, him "getting too fat and not being able to move" isnt why he didnt play, he just wasnt good enough. Were talking about DT's here, not edge rushers/defensive ends. These guys dont need to be fast, they need to clog the middle ie Wujack this season and Raji/Brace when they were in their prime at Boston College.

If guys are coming into the program out of HS at 250-270, any strength program in the country can get them to whatever weight they want to once they are in a program. Being at BC, you probably arent going to get guys who can contribute at the position immediately, they just wont have the size, but to worry about how heavy guys are is ridiculous, they will get there. I think some are severly underestimating how bad most HS weight programs are and how much getting players eating properly can help in them putting on "good size". I also agree you will see DT's with more mobility in Browns scheme.

Very true.

An older example of a guy getting to campus small-ish, but bulked up was NG TIm Morabito. Was listed at 227 lbs as a freshman LB. his RS Jr yr, he was listed at 270.

Didn't Pete Kendall get to school underweight cuz he got sick in HS? He eventually got big.

Also, a bit off topic, but with Edsall out at Maryland, will be interesting to see if there is any atrition that comes BCs way.

Off the top of my head, Andrew Isaacs was a former BC TE commit from CT who ended up at UMD. Oseh Saine was a DE from RI and a one time BC commit who also went to MD (most likely academic issues preventing him from ending up at BC. And Abner Logan is a LB from Cambridge (played at Dexter) who I don't believe was offered by BC but had offers from a number of programs including UMD, NW and NCSU.

Logan and Isaacs were both in HS during the spaz debacle so will be interesting to see if new staff has interest. Logan has played 2 years and was redshirted and suffered a season ending injury this year, could theoretically graduate this season and transfer to play immediately with 2 years left.
