The only issue there is that Murph was 212lbs. and Smith is listed at 182. Doubt if he can take the pounding of carrying the ball 15 times per game at that weight.

If you run that well and that fast, you don't get pounded very often.

EagleAction.com - Final Scrimmage Recap

CHESTNUT HILL - Myles Willis rushed for three touchdowns and the Boston College offense bounced back from a sloppy performance to post a 50-22 win over the defense in the third and final scrimmage Wednesday morning at Alumni Stadium.

"There was a lot of progression," Eagles head coach Steve Addazio said about the offense, which reached the end zone five times after scoring only two touchdowns in the team's second scrimmage last Saturday. "They had a pretty good day out there today. Looked good."

BC's junior running back had a pair of short scoring rushes from one and two yards out, as well as a 17-yard touchdown run off a good block from the left tackle. "I feel like today we just came out and we were more relaxed," Willis said of the offense. "We just had a better day than obviously last scrimmage."

Sophomore quarterback Darius Wade had one touchdown pass, a 61-yard chuck-and-run play to sophomore wide receiver Sherman Alston.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Troy Flutie found newly converted sophomore wide receiver Elijah Robinson for a 20-yard touchdown and freshman quarterback John Fadule scored on a one-yard keeper on the final play of the scrimmage.

"We felt like [this performance] was definitely well needed and that we definitely got some more confidence and that we feel like we're jelling a little bit more," Wade said.

Defensively, the Eagles couldn't duplicate their success from Saturday's scrimmage.

The defense had eight tackles for a loss, including two sacks - a combined sack for sophomore defensive end Malachi Moore and graduate student defensive lineman Evan Kelly and a solo sack for freshman defensive back Taj-Amir Torres.

Senior linebacker Steven Daniels and freshman defensive back Lukas Denis had interceptions.

"I thought today wasn't their best day," Addazio said about the defense. "They had been pretty steady all camp. I thought today the offense was probably more consistent today."

Below are some notes and quotes from BC's final scrimmage.

•Sophomore running back Marcus Outlow and junior linebacker Tim Joy were bitten by the injury bug early in Wednesday's scrimmage. Outlow fumbled on a 3rd-and-2 run from the three yard line and was escorted off the field by trainers with an apparent left arm injury. Outlow stayed on the sideline and was spotted with a left hand/arm wrap. Joy hobbled off the field with an apparent right knee injury on the third play from scrimmage and was seen pacing on the sideline. Joy has his knee wrapped as he sat on the bench early in the second half.

•Junior wide receiver Harrison Jackson did not participate and wore on the yellow jersey on the sideline. Sophomore wide receivers Chalie Callinan and Thadd Smith, freshmen wideouts Thadd Smith, Chase Pankey and Nolan Borgensen and redshirt freshman offensive lineman Sam Schmal also sat out Wednesday.

•Senior wide receiver Bobby Swigert played and was targeted in his lone scrimmage of the season. Swigert had been a full participant in practice, but hadn't scrimmaged as a precaution.

•The offensive line consisted of (from left to right) senior Dave Bowen, sophomore Jon Baker, junior Frank Taylor (center), freshman Chris Lindstrom, and junior Jim Cashman. Senior Harris Williams lined up with the first-unit offensive line in warm-ups, but did not play. Sophomore Jon Hilliman opened with the first team, but played sparingly after tweaking his leg - Addazio said it wasn't anything serious. Alston, Robinson, and sophomore wide receiver Drew Barksdale were the primary wideouts. Outlow saw time in the backfield before his injury and redshirt freshman tight end Tommy Sweeney saw time with the starters.

•Defensively, it was the usual 4-3 front for the first unit. Junior Truman Gutapfel, senior Connor Wujciak, sophomore Harold Landry and junior Kevin Kavalec were up front. Junior linebacker Matt Milano and sophomore Ty Schwab surrounded senior Daniels. Sophomores Kamrin Moore and Gabriel McClary were the left and right corners while senior Justin Simmons and junior John Jonson were the safeties.

•Willis took some heat from Addazio early in the scrimmage, with the coach yelling at his most experienced running back after he took a loss in the backfield. Apparently, the tongue lashing was enough to wake him up as Willis went on to score three times on a day when Hilliman saw limited action outside of a first-down run on the very first play of the scrimmage. "Just got to be disciplined with my vision," Willis said. "We're a run offense. If you're a run offense, you can't get behind the chains. I just had bad vision and I bounced back, tried to correct it."

•Addazio wasn't ready to name the No. 2 quarterback behind Wade after solid days from both Flutie and freshman quarterback Jeff Smith. Flutie had a touchdown pass and moved the offense effective while Smith showed a knack for the big play with some lengthy runs. "It's so hard to say. They're so different and there's so much going on," Addazio said. "I thought Troy made a few plays today. That was the first time that I saw him really look like he took a little step. Jeff made a few plays. They both made some plays, which is overall good."

•Robinson has made marked improvement in a little more than a week since his switch to wide receiver, getting on top of the defense several times and reeling in the scoring pass from Flutie. Robinson, who received more reps Wednesday thanks to a minor groin injury for Smith that kept him sidelined, had success in high school as a quarterback, but Addazio simply wanted to get his best players on the field. "He looks like he's going to be a real X receiver - long, 190-pound guy, get up and get the ball," Addazio said. "I think that was … the right decision."

•Senior kicker/punter Alex Howell has officially won the starting job and will pull triple duty for BC on kickoffs, field goals, and punts, Addazio confirmed Wednesday. Howell made four punts Wednesday for 41, 63, 46, and 62 yards for an average of 53 yards. Howell also made a 41-yard field goal from the left hash and was 2-for-3 with a long field goal of 29 yards during the Eagles' 11-on-11 kicking drills. "I'm out here to play football," Howell said. "I'm not here to be a punter or a kicker or whatever. I'm here to do whatever coach asks me to do. If he wants me to do all three, then I'm doing all three. I want to be the best at all three."

Prediction - In a couple weeks, we are going to have a QB controversy on this site the likes of which have not been seen since the No-One-Could-Be-Worse-Than-Chris-Crane and Cesspool Davis camps were bickering after the UCF game on TCS in 2008.

In the two or 3 months that Jeff Smith has been in the BC program, he's clearly jumped Flutie as the backup and will soon jump Wade. Daz has a bit of a situation on his hands.

Also, the whalepantsian idea that Flutie could switch positions is ludicrous. He'd never ever take a meaningful snap in this new and quite revamped secondary. He'll be a backup QB and perhaps FG holder. Once Anthony Brown enters the picture, young Flutes will drop to #4 on the depth chart. This is reality.

Also, Don Brown's eye for DB talent should no long be doubted. Kam Moore, the two star camp offer that most on here hemmed and hawed about, he's legit. Yaidom, he's legit. The scraps from Spazs recruiting, Simmons and Johnston, coached up and now legit.

Best comparison for Jeff Smith right now is Greg Ward, Jr. at Houston (converted from WR to QB at mid season last year). They're of similar size (Ward is 6'0, 180), laughably elusive and are both capable of making mind bottling throws on the move.

It worked out well for Houston, which finished the season strong and won a bowl game (against a Pitt team that put a clown outfit on BC), and Ward held up fine despite not being a big guy. If Smith overtakes Wade, there's a definite precedent for success with a QB like him.
Is this the 5 o'clock free crack giveaway?

I feel much better having read this thread. I don't trust Howell at all having said that, he kicks some ugly looking footballs.

I really don't see why Jeff Smith wouldn't get some time against Maine. I think when the bullets start flying Wade will be fine, but if you're sitting on some Braxton Miller type QB he needs to play immediately.

I would like to know the following from the scrimmages in which Smith established his superiority to the other candidates (not snark, SIRIUS):

1) How many reps did Wade/Smith/Flutie/ISL guy get?

2) Is it offense ones vs. defense ones; offense twos vs. defense twos; etc., or does it get mixed up so Smith played against the ones and Wade vs. the twos at some point?

3) What were Wade's targets/Smith's targets, I am most curious as to whether Wade had the more experienced but possibly less talented group of say Callinan/Dudek/Barskdale/Giacone (if he was healthy) vs. Smith getting Robinson/Alston/Pankey/Garrison?

4) Was the play calling consistent (on both sides) when Wade was out there vs. when Smith was out there, seeing as the staff has a fair amount of control over whether they are going to show a vanilla defense or some wrinkles against either? and was Smith getting to kind of just go out and throw since he's been on campus for fifteen minutes vs. Wade having to actually run the offense or did it seem like they had essentially the same tasks?

I think there is a snowball's chance in hell that anyone other than Wade starts unless he gets hurt. I also think he will be pretty good. I also think the paranoia about the O-Line, while reasonable, is premature.

Next season, we can revisit this. Good article on ESPN http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/84689/by-the-numbers-balancing-bcs-offense

I can't answer Philly interns Qs other than to say Wade is reported as getting ALL of the first team snaps against first team D, at least through the first 2 scrimmages, and extrapolating based on who was on the field (Alson for the TD, for example) the third as well.

And why not? Until Wade demonstrates he can be the man under live fire in the next couple of weeks, then he certainly isn't owed anything.....and if Smith is exhibiting an X factor as some have suggested, then the tryouts should continue in earnest for the next 2-3 weeks anyway. But from the sounds of things coming out of these summer scrimmages, it's a very good thing that the season starts with Maine and Howard.

An interesting point made yesterday on College Football Live in discussion about split QB duties at various outlets starting this season....seemed to be a consensus among the talking heads that the players many times know who "the guy" is before the coaches, because of the way each QB conducts himself in the huddle and off the field, that is out of view of the coaches.

This is why I think Wade is secure as the QB. See the quotes in Hale's ESPN article from Hilliman.

Is anyone else concerned that Smith's dominating QB play will hurt recruitment for the next few seasons? Or will his early exit for the NFL actually free up playing time earlier than anticipated? I think it will probably be both at the same time, or neither entirely.

The reps were pretty even between Smith and Wade, Fluite had fewer, and ISL guy maybe some mop up at the end.

Flutie had the 2nd and 3rd stringers, Wade and Smith had the 1st and 2nd stringers. I missed the first 30 minutes, they kept the OL together but mixed up the skill guys a bit, Outlow played with the 1s and 2s.
Outlow caught a few and Garrison caught a bunch. Thad Smith caught a Dan Henning flanker screen and was almost killed by LB or safety, he subsequently fumbled the ball. Pankey caught a Jeff Smith bomb and was streaking down the sideline as I entered the stadium.

Lots of passing maybe 50%, Wilson ran the ball a lot, Rouse ran the ball, not too many from Hilliman. Willis didn't play. Didn't see Gowins but maybe he played.

The DE Ray blew by the LT and could have killed the QB but the play was blown dead before such carnage could take place.

The offense had to do extra drills at the end, then I left. No shower visit, sorry to disappoint.

The DE Ray blew by the LT and could have killed the QB but the play was blown dead before such carnage could take place.

The offense had to do extra drills at the end, then I left. No shower visit, sorry to disappoint.

Was this Wednesday's scrimmage? Because Willis had three TDs not playing Wednesday. Are you talking about Saturday's scrimmage?

This is why I think Wade is secure as the QB. See the quotes in Hale's ESPN article from Hilliman.

Not that I necessarily disagree Wade has a fairly long leash, the quote you referenced is from the spring (i.e., before Smith enrolled).

Fair enough. I hope Smith is good enough to challenge to be starter next year. It's great news that he is that good. It's just not happening after 4 weeks on campus.

eagle9903 {l Wrote}:I would like to know the following from the scrimmages in which Smith established his superiority to the other candidates (not snark, SIRIUS):

5) Were the answers to any of the above questions gleaned from showering with the team after the scrimmage?

Saturday's, Jeff Smith's coming out party :flagus :elephant :elephant :elephant :flagus and the day he move to #2 on the depth chart(at least in my mind)!
