FSU trustees express concern about ACC's status

https://floridastate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1758834

After Wilcox made his regularly scheduled presentation and opened the floor for questions during the board's March meeting, Trustees Joe Gruters and Edward Burr both hit him with suggestions or comments that called into question the ACC's status among college football's Power Five conferences.

First, Gruters complained about the way the College Football Playoff committee seemed to dismiss FSU's conference victories last season and said he has serious doubts about ACC teams earning playoff bids in the future

Gruters ought to worry about the way Oregon shit on his football team by 40 points after their ACC status made ZERO difference to their playoff hopes (while the Big XII VIII got screwed).

Agreed. The trustees' comments are stupid. Nothing fueled the criticism of the ACC more than the best team in the ACC getting smoked in the NC game. That's Florida State's fault.

Trustees being more concerned about athletic affiliation rather than athletic performance is the problem (I've given up any hope of State School trustees ever giving a flying fuck about academics). I like BC casually being a part of major college athletics. However, as this thing unravels, I'm all-in with Swarbrick's comments. I'm fine with BC adopting an Ivy League model if the only other alternative is essentially league that determines the best minor league system. College sports (in my opinion) is very close to jumping the shark.

If you divided the conferences like Dodd did, I might never watch another BC game. I dont think I would pay to see more than 5 of those teams.

ND isnt going in the other bracket.

Dodd's breakdown as to who would join what is the problem with that article... not Swarbrick's comments. For instance, I take it he doesn't realize that Miami and Syracuse are private universities. A vision more in line with Swarbrick's would be the private schools from the current Power 5 and the academies. I would view that schedule as an improvement over the current.

I am fine in admitting that as a university and a program we have nothing in common with tOSU and Bama. I view this is as something to be proud of.

It would be interesting to see what schools like UVA and UNC would do in a situation like this. I think their academic intentions are more in line with the private, research based schools rather than tOSU and Bama. Could hold true off other schools as well.

It is all hypothetical but it would depend on the perceived viability of the New Ivy conference.

Any split with one league paying the players and the other not paying means good bye college football for most private schools. All the best players will grab the money and nobody will buy tickets to see the non salary teams.

This whole concept of paying college athletes is a diaster that colleges may never recover from. To start the only varsity sports will be football and basketball. No college is going to pay salaries to non revenue sports, although they might have to shell out money to an equal number of women athletes. Even universities like Bama and tOSU are going to have problems managing employees. TV revenues might decrease with less teams, less fan interest, most likely no teams in NY or New England, a lot of rivalries gone, etc. All of the other sports will be reduced to club level. Unless football rosters are cut by at least 20 players there will be no money to pay hockey or baseball players. At best there might be 10 college hockey teams willing to pay salaries. The NFL might also see this as an opportunity to outbid the colleges and build NFL Europe or their own minor league system here giving them additional games in their home stadiums on Sat. Let's go to Gillette and see who the Pats are developing while the Pats are on the road this week.

The FSU BOT are a bunch of yahoos. If FSU was in another power 5 conference they would not have made the playoffs.

UNC created a whole fake academic department to get jocks through. They don't care about student athletes.

This all ends with the NFL and NBA taking over a bunch of semi-pro club teams formerly associated with colleges. The Alabama Crimson Tide will be a minor league team owned by any an NFL owner that plays in Tuscaloosa. The College Football Playoff was a huge TV success and what did the NFL do? Announced that next year they are going to play games on those dates and basically force ESPN and the advertiser hands.

ND and BC are not making that philosophical choice. That is laugh out loud funny, almost as if Dodd from CBS wrote it.

No, they'd talk a good game about ethics, be the dissenting voice right up to the part where they start cutting stipend checks

LSU certainly appears to be in a position to start paying players.

Totally agree with ATL here. The more college football shifts to just being a pure money business, the NFL jumps in, provided there's profit to be made. I can see it becoming a little bit more like MLB -- smaller NFL rosters maybe, with guys being sent up and down depending on what the coach wants for his team next week. Coach Belicheck calls up some cold weather specialists from AAA Fightin' Desmond Conners in Storrs or something.

Maybe more likely is something kind of like English soccer (with no shifting between tiers) -- top tier teams culling the best players from the lower tier (nee collegiate) teams. If you're getting paid by Bama to play football, why not just leave and take more money from Tampa Bay if they ask you? More movement among players then allows you to add more games, since you can find bodies to fill the injury gaps.

The profitability of this whole thing tanks the minute it (a) loses its affiliation with schools and (b) becomes minor leagues. If the NFL thought it could run a minor league system that made the cash the NCAA hauls in, it would have done it already. Minor league systems are expenses, not revenue generators.

If Alabama v. Columbus is simply Pawtucket v. Rochester, no one is going to watch, and that 100,000 seat stadium will be very empty. As long as it is nominally a college football "championship" and players cannot go back and forth with the NFL, or go past 4-5 years, or be 32 years old, it will make money. When the college football equivalent of Lou Merloni is playing in his 13th season for the Corvalis Beavers, this shit is over.

How about NFL teams sponsoring 3 college football teams each.

Giants sponsor Michigan, BC and Ole Miss or whatever. They get involved in facilities/recruiting etc. Reminds me of the Territorial Draft from the USFL.

Furthermore, the NFL, unlike the other sports, does not want to be in the business of talent evaluation of 18 year olds that haven't developed yet. They want to be drafting players that have largely completed their physical development. Minor League football would completely screw that up and render the NFL draft a non-event with 40 rounds, like MLB and hockey - even more so, since you have huge rosters to fill at two levels + and there will be a huge miss rate.

College football is a free 3+ year tryout for NFL prospects. It's free for the NFL as well. And they don't have to develop the talent.

If the NFL wants to take over English soccer, that would be fine by me.

i think there is a gap between "minor league system no longer affiliated with schools" that teddy's rallying against and "paying players some of the revenue they generate for the schools they generate it for" that will be the eventual model of paying people money.

the minor league system will never work - for all the reasons teddy proposes and more and the big schools know this.

the big schools also talk a big game about upping competition and whatnot out of one side of their mouth and then design a non-conference schedule against lamar latrell and the other lambdas to ensure they are still up for consideration come playoff time. if you want to create a leauge with real competition week in and week out, the sec pussy schools will balk faster than hansen can type "this." you can't have a division of powerhouse college football schools that results in more than half with 9 win seasons (unless you expand the season to 18 games).

i envision a still corrupt but more above board version of what's already happening where the facotries push the limits and boundaries of pay scale and benefits to its players. the boosters that cheat and beg for the best will still cheat and beg for the best. the cheating will simply move to a new starting line.

This is exactly what is going to happen and BC will be a part of it. Football and basketball players are going to get paid. It will be set amounts, a stipend that will be part of the scholarship package. This will, of course be challenged under Title IX in the Courts. It may be possible to combat this by giving all athletes a stipend, and then giving basketball and football a "profit sharing" bonus. But make no mistake, this is going to be a fucking disaster no matter how you cut it. It's just that the minor league idea is epic stupid, whereas the paying players idea is only really stupid.

In the end, College football or basketball is going to morph into something akin to the CHL in Canada--age and time limitations with respect to who can play coupled with a modest pay scale and education package as back up.

My longstanding proposal:

Independent auditor calculates yearly NCAA net profits (TV Income - Cost of All tournaments). 5% for overhead. Maybe a small rainy day fund. Then distribute the rest amongst all student athletes from football to ladies' bowling. It's legally unchallagable regardless of how little each individual athlete would make.

Wouldn't that result in most sports being cut in order to attract the best football and basketball players by giving them a larger percentage of the pie?

You could state that NCAA determines which sports stay. Never mind Title IX requirements and in some schools other sports have sway.

Legally unchallangeable is an overstatement. But the burden would be on them either to prove that women's sports, water polo, etc. provide no monetary or goodwill value to school or that there is some legal requirement that you have to pay government employees based on profitability. Also, it's a PR win because the "college sports are slavery" crowd would have to make the "villain" women's sports/real student athletes.
