As an example to that point, Christie cited Boston College, a private school that he said benefited in increased exposure and interest in the 1980s when Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie was starring for the football team.

"Ask the people in Boston College what effect Doug Flutie had on the popularity at Boston College. It's still going on today,'' Christie said. "So the fact is, 'no, I don't think there is an imbalance — at all. Let me tell you, go talk to anybody from Boston College and they will tell you that Boston College exploded in terms of its applications and popularity of the school because of the Doug Flutie years. And it has not come down that high since.

"I don't think anybody at Boston College is sitting there wondering whether their investment in athletics has paid off. It's made it one of the hottest and most popular schools in the country.''

The contra to that argument is (a) the world has changed a bit in 30 years (specifically the cost associated with running a program) and (b) BC didn't spend that heavily in athletics then or now. The Flutie Effect has been seen by other schools too (including Rutgers in the Ray Rice years). However, the difference between BC and essentially every other program is that BC was able to capitalize on that momentum and channel it into the school... not the athletic program.

the admissions guy, Mahoney, used to argue that the upward spike for BC admissions started before Flutie. But Notre Dame is the prime example of sports drawing interest - why else did it thrive out of all the catholic colleges in the great flatness in the middle?

Christie just likes BC b/c Springsteen sent a kid there. He probably refers to Duke a lot too.

for once, hansen, i will NOT tell you to shut up. for the first time in 10,000 plus posts you actually make a salient point (albeit accidentally, i assume).

huang's disappearance in advance of the chris christie for president movement may be more than sheer coincidence. maybe chrisie had huang arrested and reassigned to camden, ellis island, seaside heights or some other gitmo type location for "observation and surveillance" during his presidental run/waddle. i'll have to keep my ears to the ground and try to get my brothers to not hate me for a minute or two as local information gatherers.

since coughlin burned them in 94/95 they aren't spending any money that doesn't have to be spent for legal reasons
