shockdoct {l Wrote}:Interesting observation from Shea field last week.

When the wristband gates opened around 1:00, I walked over to a friends tailgate and noticed two guys at the tailgate next to us setting up their spread which included two 15 gallon trash cans full of bud light chilling on ice, a case of rubinoff handles, and about 500 solo cups.

Once the general admission gates opened, the music started and we observed a flood of undergrads shotgunning beers and/or drinking straight from a fireball handle that was being passed around.
We concluded after some discussion that since you can't get into the mods unless you are 21 on gameday the upperclassmen have stepped up to provide an enjoyable tailgate experience in spite of the best efforts by the administration to prevent it.

While most of my more memorable pre-game tailgate experiences were in the mods as an underclassmen, I applaud the ingenuity of the current students as the school attempts to legislate fun out of student tailgating.
It is also truly a shame that the administration has made the decision to eliminate access for over 3/4 of the student body to the only student run tailgating location on campus.

I've noticed the same thing the past few times I've tailgated at Shea. There seems to be a large number of parents who bought tailgating spots so that their kids could come and tailgate with their friends before the game (I think someone on Atl's blog mentioned something similar).

You must have been near Ms. BCMurt09 as she mentioned to me the same group drinking from the fireball bottle.

More often than not there are large groups of students next to me. feel like so much would be resolved if they didnt have that stupid 21+ rule in the mods

also, while its been great it hasnt helped that its been absolutely gorgeous out for basically every game. when its shitty out at least i and my old roommates used to just stay inside and drink

Noticed the same which was not the case when I was at BC. Seeing kids shotgunning beers (including girls) in front of their parents was rather shocking. Is this a helicopter parent thing?

I heard they weren't even checking tickets if you had a VIP wristband last game as well.

Sounds like Shea is reverting to mid-to-late 90s form with the exception of the ticket rule.

Back then, anyone could get on Shea, and parents and alumni would host tailgates for the students to come and get wasted at them,
eventually, these kids would graduate; it would lead to more alumni to join the previous generation in hosting tailgates for the next generation.
it was one big, gorgeous, gigantic drinking cycle of life.*

unfortunately, at some point, "coach flip" and rest of the administration broke the cycle and crushed the spirit of the people with the absurd tailgaiting rules and the hideous mod fence. as a result, we are now stuck with a highly nerdified student body with some outliers here and there. however, i applaud the efforts of some alumni in trying to restore BC to its previous greatness. :kudos

Let us hope that they may succeed on this important quest.

* i fully expect the early 90s crowd to speak up and attest to the absolute absurdity of that era. i knew many upper classmen when I was a mere freshman who would tell tales of this golden age of BC and it was almost mythical.

Hansen, despite his faults, is on to something.

I (barely) rememeber many tailgates in the Robsham lot in and around 1990-91 where there were tractor trailers parked on one end of the lot. (Not sure if they were there for storage or construction, but it doesn't really matter). These were the days when you could park pretty much anywhere on campus on gamedays if you had a pass, so you had a real mix of parents, students and alumni everywhere. At least once we moved the party to the top of the trailer. Imagine 30 drunk 20-year-olds on a 12-foot high platform above an asphalt surface. Shocking no one ever fell off and killed themselves. Of course it eventually got out of control - people would drop or throw beer (and assorted other fluids) down on other nearby tailgaiters. (One of my friends "blessed" the crowd by throwing beer out on the crowd in a "sign of the cross" manner. He was know thereafter as the "Pope"). The nearby tailgaiters were generally not pleased. I think the BC police put a stop to the "trailer top" tailgates after two weeks of this.

I know others have much more wild stories, but it was great back then to be able to just drive onto campus, open the trunk, and start drinking without having to shell out $1000 or more a year for the privilege.

That helped, but his conical hat and broken English were the main factors.

I was on Shea Saturday. The assigned parking is going to be a disaster Friday night.

Shea was virtually empty on Friday night with the exception of a group of boston cops on the hunt for underage drinkers. For those who are not familiar with the current system you actually need a special Shea field ticket which is not the same as having a ticket to the game. They have moved on from the VIP wristbands and there is no possible way of entering Shea without the special Shea field ticket. Also leaving Shea was a total clusterfuck. The cops did not bother to have anyone to help direct all 20 cars leaving at the same time. :ace

Cut to Leahy doing his best "Excellent..." Mr. Burns impersonation as he looks out over an empty Shea Field from the top of the Beacon Garage Friday night.

Shea's probably going through it's final death throes. Lots of young alums chose to tailgate on Brighton because it's not as ridiculously expensive and has a little more space to not run over people trying to get to your spot. I would guess that most people will eventually prefer Brighton campus.
