Best way to see BC/ACC games outside of area

Postby Mike_S on Sun Jul 06, 2014 3:44 pm

I live in California. For many years I've had DirecTV with SportsPack and ESPN Gameplan. This has given me access to tons of college football games including pretty much all of BC's telecasts, the ACC regional package games, plus ACC games picked up regionally on ESPN/ABC. Once in a great while nobody picks up the BC broadcast, and I can still see it via ESPN3. And of course as a side benefit I get all of the Big 10 Network games, Fox Regional Sports Channel games, etc.

I am upgrading my TV's soon, and don't really want to pay as much for all the DirecTV packages if I can help it. But I do care a lot about BC/ACC/college football. And with the new SEC network it seems like some things are in flux regarding DirecTV, ESPN Game Plan, and ESPN3.

For those of you out-of-ACC-footprint: Have you had access to most/all of these games via ESPN3 or other means ? What are the best options (if any) beyond DirecTV ?

All info appreciated, and thanks!

NYC area and DirecTV has been the best, unless you want to watch everything on a PC hooked to your TV. Then its all free.

If you have a cable or satellite subscription (or know someone who does), then you'll have access to all the BC games via ESPN3 because of the ACC's deal to make every game available with ESPN in one form or another, regardless of where they are (see: AggieVision) or how god awful the opponent is.

If not, then a streaming site like firstrowsports.eu will do the trick, though its obviously less reliable and the quality isn't as good (make sure you install an adblocker first).
Is this the 5 o'clock free crack giveaway?

Thanks guys -- so to be clear, is any ACC game that would be on ESPN Gameplan now also available on ESPN 3 ? And what about the other conferences, or the ABC/ESPN Saturday Night Football regional games ?

ESPN3 is availalbe through an Xbox subscription. It's like 50 bucks and of course you need an Xbox.

Is ESPN Gameplan still a thing?
Unless things have changed in the past 9 months, you're still going to have the occasional BC road game on a conference network that ESPN will not have the rights to, like the USC game last year (although you wouldn't have been affected by that) or the Northwestern game in 2012. In these cases, you may be SOL if you are not in a certain part of the country no matter who your cable provider is. Even my local sports bar, which subscribes to multiple providers and claims to get "every game" couldn't find that Northwestern game in 2012.

Right, they went with UMass @ Michigan in MA instead of the BC game, so local BC fans got screwed. Most people in other parts of the country (like dee and shocker) were able to see the game live on BTN.

Thanks for all the info.

One other related question: Has anybody tried watching ESPN3 content on a SmartTV without hooking it up to a computer ?

I have seen a lot of mixed information on this on the internet as far as how well it works...

All info appreciated, and thanks again!

I have it via my xbox so it's not the same but I imagine similar and it's HD/near HD quality. I do hardwire the xbox to the router opposed to using wireless BTW.
