Athlon Ranks College Football Coaches

Postby DuchesneEast on Wed Apr 09, 2014 5:52 pm

Addazio checks in at #47.

47. Steve Addazio, Boston College
Record at Boston College: 7-6 (1 year)
Career Record: 20-17 (3 years)
Boston College’s Program Rank: No. 12 in the ACC, No. 60 nationally

Addazio brought instant improvement in his first season at Boston College. The Eagles went 6-18 from 2011-12 under Frank Spaziani, but Addazio guided Boston College to a 7-6 record in 2013. Addazio had plenty of talent in the upperclassmen ranks to help his transition, and his work on the recruiting trail should ensure the Eagles continue to be a factor in the bowl picture. Before taking over at Boston College, Addazio went 13-11 in two years with Temple. The Owls went 9-4 in the MAC in 2011 but slipped to 4-7 in the tougher Big East Conference. As a Connecticut native, Addazio is familiar with the recruiting scene in the Northeast and what it takes to win at Boston College. The Eagles lose several key players from last year’s seven-win team, so some regression in the win total should be expected. However, Addazio has this program trending in the right direction for 2015 and beyond.

One ahead of Lembo.

Also ranked how good a job the coaching gig is. Are we really 60th?

60. Boston College

Pros: Boston College was one of the most consistent programs in the nation from the late 1990s through the late 2000s. The Eagles averaged 8.7 wins from 1999-2009 and won one Big East title (2004) and two ACC Atlantic Division titles (2007, ’08). The school’s strong academic reputation will allow it to recruit top students from the Northeast who want to remain close to home.

Cons: Similar to Syracuse, Boston College will always have a difficult time recruiting elite players from outside its region. There's talent in the Northeast, but it's not enough to consistently compete with Florida State and Clemson for division titles in the Atlantic Division.

Final Verdict: Once the model of consistency, Boston College slipped to the bottom of the ACC food chain under Frank Spaziani. However, this program is back on track under Steve Addazio. The Eagles made a bowl in 2013, and Addazio reeled in a solid recruiting class to add to the foundation. Again, this ranking isn't about 2014 or '15. However, Addazio seems to be the right guy to get the program back on track, which should help Boston College become a consistent bowl team once again in the ACC.

I don't know how they arrived at 60. I'd say closer to 40-45 or so.

They got Addazio right after only one year, but that ranking of the coaching position gives way too much weight to the Spaziani era. Ignoring Spaz, BC is traditionally a just around the tail end of the Top 25 program. Giving some weight to Spaz sucking it down, I'd put it in the 32-40 range.

We are an "also receiving votes" program.

Yes, that is the perfect way to describe the BC football mean.

I seem to recall that Athlon has NEVER been favorable to BC.

Dazoo is 47 this year... but last year he was 77: http://athlonsports.com/college-footbal ... aches-2013

They also predicted we would be 1-7 in the Conference last year (4-8 overall): http://athlonsports.com/college-footbal ... redictions

And the sonsofbitches put us dead last in Logos: http://athlonsports.com/college-footbal ... accs-logos

After painstaking analysis, I have BC at 37.

Would have been higher, but it's a pro sports town.
