.........."Enter new coach Steve Addazio, the very man who lured Hernandez to Florida. Six months later, the Eagles have a 19th-ranked class, ahead of the likes of Oklahoma, Georgia and Oregon: all schools who simply dominate in recruiting, year-in and year-out.

Is Addazio the reason for such a resurgence in recruiting? I don’t see how you could appropriately attribute BC’s success elsewhere........."

New study claims a la carte ESPN could cost subscribers $30/month

I can't decide if I'd be willing to pay that or not.

If I read the blog correctly, it seems that there is an assumption that the revenues generated through subscription need to remain constant. I'd suggest that such revenues will be negatively impacted through an ala carte system. It doesn't mean that the channels will die off as a result. It just means their business model will have to adapt and evolve. For instance, while they will lose revenues from subscriptions, they may grow in new areas like streaming and pay-per-view. Further, they may realize lower costs by streaming instead of broadcasting. Such web-based broadcasts could also give these channels GREATER ad revenue as there will be significantly more info available as about the audience (e.g. Google ads).

Totally not worth it. I would rather go to a sports bar and spend $30 on beer, if BC wasnt on ESPN, I would never watch it.

If ESPN3 still had its functionality, no way is it worth it. Games are the only reason I tune into ESPN

I'm assuming ESPN3 would only be available to ESPN subscribers. I agree with your take on it. Games are the only reason I tune into ESPN, and I would miss the opportunity to watch a random college hoops game on a Tuesday night if I didn't have it anymore.

The kids on this board may not realize it, but in the 80s NESN was not included with most cable subscriptions. It was extra. It was like $30 a month back then, if I remember correctly.

NESN was pay, but it wasn't that expensive. 10, 11 bucks.

Well, $30 in today's dollars was $10.59 in 1980 dollars and $15.93 in 1989 dollars.

Maryland seems to be on stable financial ground:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/co ... story.html

The commission found that the Maryland athletic department operated at a deficit of more than $21 million for the past academic year...According to the report, the university has loaned the athletic department — which has a goal of being self-sufficient — upwards of $21 million to overcome the deficit, with additional loans of $20 million potentially required if the ACC continues to withhold revenue....

The commission’s report also expressed concern about Maryland’s ability to compete with better-funded Big Ten teams, even after it begins to receive its full share of revenue from the conference’s lucrative television network in 2020. Maryland’s athletic department currently falls “in the lowest quartile for revenues per student-athlete when compared to its Big Ten peers,” according to the report, which expressed doubt that “the University will reach the per student-athlete spending of our Big Ten peers during the next twelve years,” or until around 2025.

The commission also recognized the need for new athletic facilities for Maryland to be competitive in the Big Ten. But those facilities — chief among them an indoor practice field for the football team — will not be built anytime soon. Loh has ruled out using money from the Big Ten deal to cover construction costs, meaning a private fundraising campaign is needed to update the facilities. But fundraising has been among Maryland athletics’ weakest links.

Fox is having trouble getting its newly-launched premier sports channel (which they are saying will compete with ESPN) to be carried. Time Warner is balking. And even DirectTV and Dish haven't signed on (though it is believed to be happening soon). The B10 Network relies on Fox to negotiate its deals. With all the talk about the Cable TV bubble and the uncertainty surrounding the many different lawsuits, it will be interesting to see what deal BTN gets (and for how long). That said, they undoubtedly will be making more than the ACC and MD will certainly see a multi-million dollar increase. But, is it $5mm per year or $30mm more per year??? If it is $5mm and they have to pay the buyout, they made a terrible financial decision that will likely permanently sink the already moribund program.

Fox Sports 1 launched. I still question how they are going to deliver the premiums sought for the Big Ten when they couldn't do it for their wholly-owned flagship sports station.

I just discovered I get FS1 so I turned it on and watched a few minutes of their morning highlights show. It's just as annoying as ESPN, but it comes off as stinky desperate because they're trying to emulate ESPN instead of offer a better alternative. Hard pass.

They do have Jay Onrait and Dan O'Toole from the Canada SportsCentre, so that's a positive.

They have Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson or whatever her name is. And Molly, who's on Fox's bottom team for NFL games.

And here are 48 minutes of Jay Onrait and Dan O'Toole highlights:
