BC coach Spaziani evaluates his Eagles in first scrimmage
By Diana C. Nearhos| Globe Correspondent

March 18, 2012
The Boston College football team has its third offensive coordinator in as many years, as well as some big holes to fill, and thus has a lot to address in spring practice.

The Eagles had their first scrimmage of the spring Saturday and showed that they have been tackling those issues.

“It was a good start,’’ coach Frank Spaziani repeated three times. “We came out with some edge, and it was a good start with some new coaches and some young players.’’

Junior quarterback Chase Rettig took the majority of the first-team snaps and completed 10 of 17 attempts. He threw three touchdown passes, all for about 20 yards.

“I think he managed the game well,’’ Spaziani said. “It’s his first time under fire with the new stuff and I think he handled it real well. He’s been having a good spring so far.’’

Sophomore quarterback Josh Bordner played mostly with the second team, but got a few snaps with the first team. He hit Spiffy Evans with a 40-yard touchdown pass and completed 8 of 15 attempts.

Sophomore Tahj Kimble got the largest share of time at running back, about 60 percent of the plays. Junior Andre Williams took about 30 percent, with Rolandan Finch playing the rest.

Both Kimble and Williams broke through for touchdowns, Kimble with a 20-yard run and Williams a 30-yarder.

Sophomore defensive ends Brian Mihalik (6 feet 8 inches) and Mehdi Abdesmad (6-6) showed that they could be forces to be reckoned with. Each broke up passes at the line of scrimmage.

“That’s what’s good about a scrimmage, as far as a practice,’’ Spaziani said. “There aren’t coaches out there telling you what to do.

“You’re playing football, so we’ll see a couple different things.’’

This was the first time BC’s linebackers were tested with out tackle machine Luke Kuechly. The Butkus Award winner stood on the sideline as Steele Divitto, Sean Duggan, Nick Clancy, and Nick Lifka divvied up the snaps.

Sophomore Kevin Pierre-Louis was sidelined because of injury.

Many Eagles were on the sideline as they recover from injuries, but such is the nature of spring ball.

The three defensive backs who saw the most playing time last year - C.J. Jones, Sean Sylvia, and Manuel Asprilla - were all out, prompting Spaziani to throw redshirt freshman kicker Joey Launceford in at cornerback.

“Spring is about not beating anybody, and not about the team,’’ Spaziani said. “It’s about individuals getting better.

“We’ve got to have enough guys to line up and then other guys can practice.’’

One of the EA writers said something along the lines of the offense pretty much looks the same. Yay.

Wow, we have had so much turnover, we're lucky we're even fielding a team. Who could even blame Spaz if we went 2-10 this year? Just getting a team together is a major accomplishment.

Why not just let a different Flynn Fund donor step in as OC each game?

Now they are holding a Draft Night on 4/26 with panel Cronan, Kendall, Colinet, St. Pierre and Sean Ryan hosted by Meterparel. Comes with a "complimentary tailgate style meal" which means different things to different people.

It'll probably be the same spread they have at the Plex tailgate before home games which, in all honesty, isn't that bad.

If you go, will you ask the panel if any of them have joined Lively's Facebook group?

Does this mean that the cops will be hovering over you and ushering you to your seats 30 minutes before the start of the draft? THIS IS IMPORTANT.

Right now there are 3 running backs (assuming Montel is gone) and 3 or 4 DTs if Ramsey is hurt, Rudolph suspended and maybe Quinn lied to the Rudolph investigators - and there is a walkon frosh kicker playing DB.

Maybe backup OL will be switched over to DT like two years ago when Mike Goodman got hurt and his career ended. They can't switch Keyes to RB because they're even worse off at DB.

When is second scrimmage? I bet Spaz is going to be very unavailable for interviews, written statements only?

I think Kieran Borcich will have to play DT rather than DE. Mehdi Abdesmad will be the back-up DE, if he doesn't develop into the starter.

I don't know if they're grooming Connor Wujciak for DE or now DT.

The Family Funfest and pre-game activities that normally take place for the Spring Game have been "moved to August. Details to follow."

The company line will be that they are going to have another open scrimmage during August practice and will have it then because the weather is guaranteed to be nicer. Might even be the return of the season ticket holder BBQ?

IS IT POSSIBLE THAT MC GILLIS WILL BE A CLOSED SCRIMMAGE?

They want to go as low key as possible because of both Rudolph situation and the team overall, remember Spaz said they are playing guys to give them an opportunity to get better. In English that means they are dangerously thin at RB and now DT too and DBs which were the teams weakest link last year are weaker still with walkon frosh kickers.

If this was a real BCS team that was concerned about their W-L the next couple years they'd be out there trying to pick up a couple JUCO DBs,a RB and now a DT.

“We’ve got to have enough guys to line up and then other guys can practice.’’

English translation:

"We really don't have enough guys to field two complete offensive and defensive teams so we've got to use walkons to fill positions, so keep in mind when you read about the touchdown passes - we had a walkon freshmen kicker playing DB in that scrimmage, stuff like that. We're going to go low key as much as possible this spring - kind of keep the McGillis game closed.

Hopefully by the fall we'll figure out a way to fill some of these positions but right now we really don't have the right personnel to fill them. If I knew we were going to have problems at so many positions I would have tried to use those scholarships for some more freshman or JUCO DBs, RBs and DTs but it's too late now, we've just got to keep our fingers crossed. This spring has kinda been like Pop Warner, I send the coaches out to ask 'who wants to be a DB, who wants to be a running back', these kids have been great and responded to the challenge, I'm really proud of them".

Set aside the complete roster mismanagement (ie recruiting a functional DB field) but why the F would you be putting a walk on kicker and a walk on quarterback in the backfield.

Even if it is temporary due to injury, wouldn't a WR ( little used Donte Elliot or even Marcus Grant who isnt an eligible player this year) make more sense just based on pure athleticism and the similarities between the postions. I would think a WR would be much more familiar with the DB position than a QB and kicker. Also, by my count, their are at least 3 (I assume) walk on WR's listed on the roster right now. Keep it going :spaz2 , you're making :toby look like Bear Bryant these days
