The worst part about this Penn State scandal has been listening to the insufferable Penn State grads constantly defending the honor of Penn State.

Sans scandal, it was an above average institute of higher learning, at best. Let's not pretend that a world without Penn State would be noticeably worse. With or without the scandal, Penn State grads don't poop ice cream.

The second worst part has been listening to Joe Pa's family defend Joe Pa. Have some sympathy for the victims and keep your mouths shut!

That's actually something they're working on at Penn State's Diary Sciences department (real thing, btw). Someday this statement of yours will look foolish.

Well today is the day the Ped State findings are released. Appears to be a spectrum of expectations from isolated idiots to program wise carnage.

Assuming that being a pederast is a sickness and not a choice, Schultz, Spanier and Curley at least (and maybe Paterno) are arguably worse than Sandusky.

CNN breaking news: the lack of reporting amongst Penn State officials has been deemed interstate commerce and the Supreme Court will be taking the case.

Attention NCAA. Read footnotes "m" and "v."

If the NCAA ignores the unbiquitous undue influence of JoPa to suppress embarassing or harmful information allowing hosts of people to engage in criminal conduct with impunity (from football players getting into fights on up to the pedo), they ought to be investigated by Congress the way Freeh has investigated PSU.

This whole NCAA "governance system," treating misconduct among the baby rapists as "boys being boys," has been nothing more than a mechanism to suppress anything negative that would derail the gravy train that is college football. If they can't get this one right and make an example of PSU, they will have proven to be incapable whatever their stated mission is. An organization that cannot carry out its most fundamental purpose should be completely dismanteled.

Freeh's firm was hired by the BOT and the report is pretty obvious in its BOT exonerating slant.

I admit that I was generally so disgusted with what happened that I hadn't read up much on it, sticking to the TV coverage. In reading this report, however, I can't believe that Sandusky wrote a book entitled "Touched: The Jerry Sandusky Story." Wow. Just wow.

Would JoePa have acted differently if PSU didn't suck in 200

Postby nerd on Thu Jul 12, 2012 9:29 am

1995: 9-3
1996: 11-2
1997: 9-3
1998: 9-3
1999: 10-3
2000: 5-7
2001: 5-6

The Janitor saw Sandusky in the showers in the Fall of 2000; McQueary saw Sandusky in the showers in February 2001. If Penn State didn't have a losing record in 2000/2001, would Paterno have been more willing to have this investigated fully? It's a lot easier for a coach to survive a scandal when you're winning 10 games a year, not 5.

I wonder how kids like Akeel Lynch and Jamil Pollard and Malik Golden are going to feel about being called pedos all season long? Seems like a questionable decision even if the alternative was Spazoo.

I'm fairly certainy JoePa and crew would have done the same irregardless of record. The ego of being bigger than the abuse and more than capable of handling a couple "lapses in judgment" (as they probably saw it) would not have affected the outcome in my opinion. Selfish actions are selfish actions. Maybe it would have been done slightly differently, but all the same major results would have occurred.

If Penn State alumni have a shred of decency in their hearts, they tear down that JoePa statue and rename the library (and any other buildings he paid for) in memory of sexually abused children everywhere.

If Doug Flutie was ever convicted of child abuse, I'd be the first one on campus with a tow truck and a winch.

This report makes me angry.

I hold the Penn State "community" equally responsible for failing Sandusky's victims. Those University Park yahoos led the deification of Penn State football. The NCAA needs to cripple this program for a few years so these idiots can suffer like those children did in the only manner that will get through to them.

I alluded to this yesterday, but I think the ethical misprioritization amongst the Paternos and those in the PSU community is arguably a bigger story than Sandusky himself at this point.

Here's why I'm not sure I agree: I think a penalty has to serve some kind of purpose. It should either be punitive or Prophylactic against future similar actions.

Punitive: Here, the bad actors are completely screwed. Curley, Schultz and Spanier should end up in jail, and they are going to be or already are financially and reputationally ruined and will never employed again. McQueery will never work as a coach again and is widely hated. Paterno's legacy has been destroyed and he is dead. Sandusky will die in jail, his wife is disgraced and her life is ruined. The NCAA can literally do nothing to those people that has not been dished out by the criminal and civil legal system or public opinion.

Prophylactic: Its a hard argument to make that a pedo is going to be deterred by NCAA violations. It is a better argument that killing the PSU program would ensure that no other college football program and school administrators ever cover for a pedo again. I have a feeling though that the publicity, backlash and civil and criminal penalties are probably more than enough to accomplish avoidance of a repeat performance elsewhere.

The one strong reason I can think of is to avoid the appearance of hypocrisy, but I'm not sure how sound that is either.

While I understand that this situation may not technically fit under the guidelines that would allow for Penn State to receive the death penalty, it is unlike anything that has ever happened. If the NCAA chooses not to give them the death penalty, what sanctions might we be looking at? And will PSU impose sanctions on themselves ala Baylor? I don't know enough about the manner in which the NCAA imposes these sanctions, but if anyone has a clue, let us know.

Because I really hate Penn State.
