Point of order, that's in Boston. But funny nonetheless.

i figured he could use some of the goodwill he's earned by being the gayest football player ever to help bust the rutgres qb out of jail.

by the way, higgy will likely have a problem with this designation but i'm not trying to be disrespectful. we've already established that SAMS is not the first gay player so all this hype must be because he's the gayest player ever. that's all i'm trying to say

Apparently, I'm not socially aware enough to know whether or not the gayest football player ever (your term) has some sort of special abilities that would help bust the Rutgres qb out of jail. I would guess that his sexual orientation does not provide him with such powers. That would be pretty cool, though. Pie Charts would probably be more popular.

What's ironic is that I am actually in the wrong as Jhiggi went to a "university" around the Cambridge area and not a "community college." Since the "university" clue rules out the "institute" around that area, I'm going to have to presume that Jhiggi is a Jumbo.

Most historic events prompt documentaries. This one prompts an Oprah-produced reality show that has apparently been taping (and paying $) for weeks.

No it is not. Gay athletes were in the NFL before Michael Sam. There were no black players in MLB before Jackie Robinson (other than some dude from the 1880s).

Not openly Gay(acknowledged by the public as being gay), so therefore it is the same thing as Jackie Robinson...
Using your logic, then Jackie Robinson was not the first black baseball player as there are numerous players that were of mixed race but appeared to be white.....

I'm not getting that deep into this debate, but it is not remotely close to being the same. Let's just say there is ZERO chance Michael Sam's number ends up retired in every stadium in football.

Agreed. It's not equivalent in scope as the gay community or lgbt or whatever are not segregated from the rest of society. All that I am saying is that it is similar in that it is a historic event that hopefully will aim to reduce one form of systematic oppression. Not trying to split hairs on whether or not this is LITERALLY the same thing as the Jackie Robinson event.

Gays were systematically opressed from jobs in the NFL? news to me.

So for you this has nothing to do with the actual issues, but is simply a matter of who is more powerful. Without getting into the relative power of gay rights groups in this country given the sea change in marriage laws, I just want to be clear that you think religious persecution of Christians is okay because they have power.

The definitions of "oppression" have changed dramatically in the past 70 years.

The definition of almost every word changes through out time. Just because it has changed doesn't mean that it has vanished and is no longer a problem.

Yes, but this change means that oppression for Michael Sam doesn't mean not being able to eat or piss anywhere in half of the country. Those differences in definition, when combined with the fact that everyone knows that there are already many gay players in the locker room, are why his situation isn't remotely in the ballpark of that of Jackie Robinson.

completely disagree. Everything is relative, so while the oppression gays experience today does not literally compare to the levels of oppression seen 70 years ago, relatively speaking to the oppression other groups face throughout society the gays are still extremely oppressed. Because everything is relative the Sam event is in the ballpark of the Jackie Robinson event, just not to the same extent of the Robinson event.

There are many other reasons why Robinson's event was more impressive, but make no mistake, the Sam event is in the same realm.

So you agree, but you are going to say you don't agree just to keep up appearances. Got it.

No, not at all. While Robinsons event was more impressive, I still believe that the Sam event is also important and will hopefully help the gay community be more widely accepted in society. I did not start this discussion to state that it is equivalent to the Rpbinson event, rather started this discussion because I think it's classless to rip on Sam (who is displaying courage) as he is an easy target. I used the Robinson event to draw a parallel between the prejudice that was prevalent during Robinsons time and Sam's time; while Robinson faced more imminent danger and hatred, Sam is also dealing with hatred and simple minded bigots.

I accept your concession on this issue.

PS - to clarify, huang is calling you gay

I'm not calling him anything. I'm just trying to figure out why he thinks that Michael Sam was "ripped" (his word) here. All I see is a lame joke about Sam's gayness and a couple of other little shots. Nobody really made a statement for or against the fact that Sam is an openly gay football player. I feel like jhiggi is making overly broad accusations about the people that post here, and I feel like it is my duty to stand up for the community that I represent. His statements reek of the pot painting the kettle in the glass house a hypocrite.

p.s. - tre is not calling you gay, as he is sensitive to the subject (his brother, Ping Jang, has been known to dabble)

I view the little gay jokes and few shots that you reference as Sam being ripped. Not only is it not funny, nor original to rip on Sam for being gay, I think that it is also inappropriate due to the significance of this event.

In no way, shape or form am I being hypocritical, I am just saying that I am disappointed in the ignorance displayed by some posters here.

So how did you feel about all of the jokes about Tim Tebow and his faith? Was Tebow being ripped?

You need to stop being humorless.

Image

The Christian Right (one of the most powerful factions in the history of the world) and the lgbt community have nothing in common regarding this argument. Are you fucking serious? I sincerely hope that you did not grab a bc diploma.

So you answer a question by posing a question.

Question: So how did you feel about all of the jokes about Tim Tebow?

Answer: Are you fucking serious?

By failing to answer the question, I can only assume that you are OK with the jokes about Tebow, but not about Sam. This makes you a bigot.

The fact remains that it takes more courage in today's culture to be an open Christian than it does to be openly gay. Tebow was the subject of much open humor on late night talk shows, Saturday night live, Bill Maher, stand up comics etc. Sam has been subjected to none of that. I must confess that I found some of the Tebow comedy amusing, but I still respected him for having his beliefs.

Historical references are meaningless. Having power in previous centuries means nothing when judging someone today. The Byzantine empire was once the most powerful on earth, but that signifies nothing when evaluating Istanbul in the 21st century.

Where did you get your diploma? Bongo's Cambridge School of Upholstery?

The ripping of Sam was the combination of TW's joke and the preceding comment that prompted TW's joke.
