Now that the elevator knockout video is public, the Ravens are releasing Ray Rice. Roger Goodell is backtracking on claims that he'd already seen the video, and will suspending Rice indefinitely.

Does anybody really believe that neither the NFL nor the Baltimore Ravens ever saw this video before today?

tmz's ability to find shit is always ashtonishing to me so... i could offer some semblence of doubt of the nfl and/or ravens management not seeing this before today

I can only imagine what kind of phone call he got this morning. Some weasel at the head office told him to kowtow or else his access would be cut off.

He was never a journalist, so I can't really assail his journalistic integrity. But I can say that he is a boot licking puscadore.

What's Peter King's involvement in all of this?

He spoke with 100% certainty that the NFL saw the video tape from inside the elevator before suspending Ray Rice for two whole games. Now that the NFL knows that everybody else saw that video, they've decided to pretend that they, too, were seeing that video for the first time today. Peter King backed off his initial claim and is saying that the NFL never saw the video before today.

It seems there is a very good possibility that Goodell is lying when he says he is just seeing the footage for the first time. It would be lovely to see him caught in the lie. I reckon if he is exposed, it could cost him his $44M year job.

I didn't think so, but then SI gave him his own Grantland and he continues to get face time on NBC.

Not sure I understand why the league would bend over backwards to protect Ray Rice. What's the logic there?

I believe the NFL had to have seen the punch video before today. No way that TMZ has the wherewithal and money to obtain the surveillance video and the NFL does not. No way.

I am not saying Goodell felt compelled to protect Rice. I am of the thought that Goodell vastly underestimated the public outcry associated with domestic violence. He got it way wrong with the 2 game suspension, and later came out with a new policy. Today's video added fuel to outcry and he backtracked more. He has no more room to backtrack if it is revealed that he saw the video before today.

Never ascribe to malice that which can be easier explained by ignorance. I don't believe Goodell acted with malice to "protect" Rice. Rather, he was ignorant to the sheer outcry against domestic abuse. He totally underestimated the response by women, which is shocking from a league that dedicates October to wearing pink and making sure mom's let their boys grow up to play football. Compare Goodell's response to domestic violence to Adam Silver's response to racism. You can't alienate women in football. They are the moms who send the boy on the field and they are the wives who give away 16 Sundays a year. In hoops, you sure the hell can't alienate the black community. Silver understood that. Goodell? Not so much on the women topic.

If it is established that he saw the video prior to today, I believe there is a very good chance the owners fire him. I am guessing Goodell not sleeping too well tonight.

Firstly, I am not 100% convinced that Goodell saw the tape. Yes, the NFL has a lot of resources and juice, but this is still America. There are limits to what they can do and get. While its definately possible, and maybe likely, that he had the video, its also possible that they didn't, but that later someone with access to it sold it to TMZ for a pretty penny.

If he saw the video, I think its pretty obvious why he would "protect" Ray Rice. He is a star player, and pro sports are about the stars. This is not as important as in, say, the NBA, but its still important. All things being equal, Goodell prefers an NFL with Ray Rice over one without him.

Also, he seems like a pretty analytical guy - a logic guy if you will. From the video that was made public from the very beginning, it was obvious that Ray Rice knocked her the fuck out. Goodell probably figured that since everyone knew he knocked her out, what difference does it make if they ever see the second video. But like many analytical or logic guys, they sometimes fail to factor emotion into the mix, and fail to realize that most Americans are stupid, and overreact to shit. When I saw the video, I was like "what is the big deal - this is exactly what I suspected Ray Rice did all along". But I think like Goodell does, and not like the overwhelming majority of Americans.

He knew the video would come out which is why he changed gears and upped the suspension for domestic violence.

The ravens also took their shot and cut Rice before the league could suspend him indefinitely. I think the Goodell is a goner.
