Two former Xaverian High School football players - who have carved out college football careers for themselves - are due in a Boston courtroom today to face allegations they repeatedly kicked and punched a homeless man in Allston this January even after he slipped into unconsciousness, authorities said.
Craig “CJ” Parsons, who is a senior at Boston College and a tight end on the school’s football team, and his former Xaverian teammate, Anthony Varrichione, of Medway, are accused of assaulting the man on Jan. 26. Parsons is also charged with violating the witness intimidation statute for allegedly urging an unidentified person not to identify him to authorities.
The charges stem from a grand jury investigation into the incident conducted by Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office. Both are charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious injury, according to prosecutors.
According to Conley’s office, the victim was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in critical condition. “He remained hospitalized for three days and now has no memory of the incident,’’ spokesman Jake Wark said in email.
Both men are scheduled to be arraigned today in Suffolk Superior Court.
Varrichione is a recent graduate of Marist College in New York where he played quarterback, according to his attorney Timothy Flahertyand the school’s athletic department website.
“He’s never been in any difficulty before this,’’ said Flaherty, who added the two men know each other from their years at the Westwood Catholic high school. “He is hopeful that after a complete and through review of the facts of this incident, he will be exonerated.’’
Parsons’s attorney Michael Doolin described his client as a “good kid, a hardworking kid from a nice family.’’ He said Parsons is scheduled to graduate from BC this academic year.
Doolin added: “We are in the process of investigating this case and I think when all of the facts come out it will be apparent that CJ Parsons is not guilty of these charges.’’
According to the BC football website, Parsons is six foot, six inches tall and weighs 253 pounds. When he was at Marist, Varrichione was listed as six foot, four inches tall with a weight of 225 pounds.
