The NL race is interesting. The Phillies are everyone's pick but the Brewers are the hottest team in baseball and also beat the Phillies two out of three at Philly. They have a four game series in Milwaukee in September.

As a Phillies fan I don't see Milwaukee or SF as good matchups, although I'd be optimistic in either series.

Milwaukee won't get to face Kyle Kendrick in the playoffs fortunately.

As a Red Sox fan, I feel the same way about the Rangers and Detroit. I'd rather play the Yankees in a short series.

I'm shocked that the Yankees are ahead of the Sox at this point. If there was a steeper penalty for the WC team (e.g.: only 1 home game) I don't think the Sox would be the second place team. That's not a knock on the Yankees, but Boston is simply a better team in many regards and if they HAD to win, I think they would. In this regard, I completely understand TW's comments about being frustrated by their play because they are a juggernaut. If they do finish 2nd, it's a direct result of the diasterous first 12 games.

With all that said, they have to be 2.5-1 favorites to come out of the AL, despite the potential matchup problems in Round 1, and the inherent crap shoot of a 5 game series. It would not shock me if the ALCS was DET-TEX, they are good enough to win 3/5.

Yup, and for this Phillies fan that day in 2007 was one of the best sports days. Clinching a playoff spot for the first time in about 15 years, on the last day of the regular season, while needing everything to go right for it to happen, and then watching it all happen live. That was fun. Thanks guys for bringing back that memory.

Since 2005: Papelbon has had his arm coddled since he hurt his shoulder, Oki never pitched over 69 innings and started to suck when he turned 34 so maybe something there, MDC pitched over 70 innings once and never over 60 in any other year, Timlin pitched until he was about 60 so no abuse there, Lopez was a classic LOOGY and only pitched big innings (69) in one year. There haven't really been any other significant relievers for the Sox aside from them
