2011 MLB Prediction: 1965 All Over Again, Mansions on Wheels

When the Yankees lost in 1964, to Bob Gibson, Ken Boyer and the Cardinals, they picked up Johnny Keane Manager of the Cardinals and fired Yogi Berra. I figured the Yankees would never lose a pennant when I was that age. Yogi was humiliated and it was a blessing for the luckiest guy on earth.

Then 1965. Injuries and old age and baseball being the game it is --- the Yankees started the slide in bolivian. I had to wait until 1976 for another banner and then 1977 and 1978. Never missed one playoff or WS Game in 3 years.

Sabathia has gone a lotta miles lately and he may have lost 25 pounds but with that body he could gain it back in 10 minutes in NYC. His knee is balky too. Burnett seems disinterested and has 3 years left. Hughes will have a big year, but Nova, Mitre, Prior?, Colon?, Garcia? Madrigal? -depending on rookies??? --- and a bunch of retreads and not finding a hitter in the outfield like Crawford??

They paid $45M too much for Jeter and 2 years too many. A-Rod seems to have lost his fire and Cameron Diaz has taken his legs out feeding him popcorn ----and A-Rod just swings for HR's and Bonds record. Teixiera is solid and Cano is looking for the big jackpot contract extension. Posada is old and a DH, Martin is fragile and I see an early callup for Montero. The outfield hitting is very sketchy with Granderson, Swisher and an injured Gardner and please.....Andruw Jones???

Nope. The Yankees were too busy building Mansions and Hal "Son of the Boss" Junior and Cashman missed the boat on Cliff Lee trade deal in July, and the Yankees whiffed on Carl Crawford too. When veteran teams have a bad years and some all at once, they fold up tents early especially with big contracts. I see the Yankees in the toughest division in baseball and maybe baseball history with the Orioles and Blue Jays getting much better and Tampa has young stud pitching and a farm system and a solid Manager in Maddon----the Yanks will be having a "wheels off" season, ergo, the Mansion on Wheels theme, a trailer park finish.

The Yankees will not be in the Hunt for Bunny October. The Red Sox are far superior and Tampa will surprise even with losing those 3 big guys. I think The White Sox have solid balance and power hitting and Scoscia outmanages the 3 weak, pathetic Al West rivals. Anyone could be a genius with money, except maybe Texas --- and win that sad AL West division.

The Phillies are simply up and down tough and can hit and just the best team assembled and another young rookie star coming on. I think the Braves are much better with another star rookie too, and the Brewers are now set in cement in a weak Al Central now with Wainright's season ending injury and the NL West with the Dodger divorce is all Giants.

I have been right 2X in 7 years. Red Sox in 2006 and Yankees in 2009. When the Vegas Season wins comes out and you see the Yankees at 95 1/2 or so... take the under and move to Nantucket.

The 3 retreads could be huge or busts....who knows?? I think the Yankees are in for a 55-52 type of start in that brutal AL East and then go 33-22..in a late season run and then fade...88 would be the max and 79 is still my call.

i will admit to placing wagers on pre-season football games BUT i agree that pre-season baseball is just too much.

in fact, much like the nba and nhl, regular season baseball games are not for gambling

There is no good reason to be placing any bets on baseball, basketball or hockey unless it is to bet on a post-season series winner. The games are too unpredictable. That said, on exception would be betting on the team behind in an NBA series that is sitting at 3-1 and the team behind is at home. That's easy money and it rarely matters who the teams are. They'll just send in Joey Crawford.

At the outset of every season, Theo aims to build a team capable of 90 wins at a minimum taking into account potential injuries and all that jazz. Generally that is good enough to make the playoffs and, from there, the playoffs are more or less a crapshoot. They probably would've been above the 90 wins last year too had Darnell McDonald and Daniel Nava not been intodruced to the masses.

The Phillies with the on paper look of 105+ might cruise in at where I have them.

The Yankees who could be out of the race in late August, might play rookies and shut down some older pitchers in the end or veterans and put A-Rod on waivers and see if anyone picks up the 7 more years and $210M?

Its fun to guess, but Philadelphia has a great hitting rookie, solid tough experienced players and the Red Sox are a nudge behind.

The White Sox may put iit all together, but aside from them the Rays have young talent coming up and the Braves did well in the off season.

Tough to pick against a Red Sox and Phillie World Series. If the Phillie starters are on, that will be a classic battle.
