So now my keepers are looking like Giancarlo Stanton, Jacoby Ellsbury, Chris Sale, and one other (Lance Lynn, Starling Marte, or someone else). I'd go to war with that crew.

We have had some very heated veto discussions in our league for dump trades like this but it's been a few hours and so far no one has motioned for it yet. Considering Upton and Lincecum have been huge disappointments and Sale is the #4 rated starter on ESPN.com, I would say it's not so lopsided when you consider the keeper aspect.

BTW, the Alfonso Soriano/Carlos Beltran led Fab Melo's Tutor are now sitting on top of the standings.

You must not have the whiny bitch contingent that I have in my league. Funny enough, they are often more concerned with who is getting a possible deal rather than the fairness of the trade itself.

My veto would be based on if this guy is all about 2012, then he's selling high on Sale and getting rid of an aging, oft-injured star in Berkman, but getting back some very proven talent that could explode at any moment down the stretch. How can he take on those salaries? Or am I assuming too much about the league?

I will say, I like my pitching keepers going into next year:
1) Weaver ($16)
2) Dickey ($6)
3) Vogel ($6)

That's a solid, cheap base for a very good rotation in a 10 teamer.

I royally screwed up my auction though but I avoided the sacco of double entry fee to the person coming in last.

We do have a few whiny bitchy types, but we also have a lot of dump trades like this. When teams are out of it, they are mostly trading for keepers. This year we added what we call the Intercontinental Title, which is a $60 prize to the team that has the best final month. So we have some incentive to stay competitive. My team has actually moved up a spot since this trade.

Our salaries work like this: we get $180 to bid on players in the auction draft, and whatever we draft them at, that is their salary. We get 4 keepers, and a keeper's salary is taken out of the $180 total. Any free agent pickup has a salary of $1. After a player has been a keeper for three seasons, his salary starts to go up $5/year until he goes back to the draft. Taking on those salaries isn't an issue for the other guy, but he's probably not going to keep any of them so he's really trading a great keeper for loaners to try and win now.

In other news, I just picked up Manny Machado, so maybe he'll be my 4th keeper if he keeps playing.

Bump

My league draft is scheduled for March 24. This year I've put together a spreadsheet with my team and their projected stats which I can plug in mid-draft and compare to last year's champion. :geek:

The big change for this season is replacing the Saves category with Saves+Holds, or Solds. This should make things more interesting because now some set-up relievers will be as valuable as closers. Has anyone here ever used Solds or Holds in a league?

As for my keepers, I'm probably going with Giancarlo Stanton ($6), Chris Sale ($1), Manny Machado ($1), and Allen Craig ($1). Craig was a nice surprise for me last season and it looks like he's going to start at 1B for the Cardinals now.

I've used holds as its own category. Makes getting one of the 10 consistent closers less relevant, and avoids having to scramble to figure out who is the 3rd man in line for the As and Diamondbacks' closer position every three weeks.

That's what I'm hoping for. It will be less of a game of musical chairs now. I've long wanted to add holds so other relievers had some value.

Frankly, saves are an idiotic stat for fantasy, but they are so ingrained that you pretty much have to use them.

We had our auction last night. I'm worried about my hitting-- I think I'm going to need more home runs and more steals. Grandy is going to be out for a few months and Werth and Quentin are both question marks, so I could use some OF help too. I think my pitching is strong and I have two good catchers, so I may be able to pull a trade. Note that we replaced Saves with SOLDS (Saves + Holds), so there are lots of relievers available and I didn't spend more than $5 on any of them.

Thoughts?

12-team, 5x5 roto league with Solds replacing Holds. 4 keepers.

C Yadier Molina, StL C
C Miguel Montero, Ari C
1B Allen Craig, StL 1B, OF (Keeper)
2B Marco Scutaro, SF 2B, SS
3B Manny Machado, Bal 3B (Keeper)
SS Jose Reyes, Tor SS
2B/SS Alcides Escobar, KC SS
1B/3B David Freese, StL 3B
OF Giancarlo Stanton, Mia OF (Keeper)
OF Curtis Granderson, NYY OF
OF Hunter Pence, SF OF
OF Jayson Werth, Wsh OF
OF Jason Kubel, Ari OF
UTIL Brandon Moss, Oak 1B, OF

Has Clay Buchholz been traded in anyone's leagues yet? He's spitting hot fiyah but I don't expect it to last--at least not like this. I'd like to move him now but I'm curious what caliber of player I could get for him.

I'd keep him. He won't have a sub-1 ERA all season, but if he doesn't get hurt, there is no reason to think he won't be a Cy Young candidate.

I think he'll continue to have a fine year, but if your staff can absorb the hit (teehee) and you need help elsewhere, I would sell high. Especially to Sully or Mickey.

currently in first place in my auction draft 5x5 roto league. even though a couple of my guys are off to unsustainable starts, I also have some cornerstones that are underachieving, therefore I'm not as worried about blowing my load too soon as I may otherwise be in April. I went heavily towards power over speed and young/cheaper/high upside arms and it's paying off so far.

I'm going to need more power, and I'd like to upgrade my middle infield now that Reyes is out until midseason. I have Chris Sale, Buchholz, Lester, Sabathia, Fister, and Weaver (on the DL) so if I can part with one of them to bring in another power hitter I'm going to do it.

Edwin Encarnacion's owner is talking about blowing the team up and trading EE-- he wouldn't give him up for Buchholz and if he did it would probably be vetoed, so I may have to offer one of my better starters and maybe pair it with one of my power hitters like Mark Reynolds.

Really? Because to me, last year was a fluke for both of them. Buchholz has 162 game averages of 15-10, 3.78 with a respectable 1.32 WHIP. Encarnacion is .262/27/86 and an .810 OPS. Is this a 5x5 league, because I see them as pretty much even when healthy, with Buchholz having the higher upside. I suppose a lot has to do with how you score your league.

Don't like EE, never have. I'd keep Buchholz over him. And he doesn't help your middle infield, although as you said, you can afford to trade away a pitcher. Weaver is overrated by many too, if he comes back and has a good outing or two - sell, sell, sell.

By the way, teddy I may owe you some of my winnings - if it holds up. Choo was a huge value target of mine, based mostly on me kicking the tires after our conversations last season.

I'm skeptical on CC, especially because of his declining velocity and the offseason elbow surgery. Can't move him after last night but if he puts together a couple of nice starts I might look for some help at a position of need.

With regards to Encarnacion, the big thing was that he finally got full playing time and increased his walks (his BB% in 2012 increased 5%). If he can maintain that it's huge. I have him in one league but that's only because it's a keeper and he cost me a 17th rounder. I was avoiding him in everything else as I'm somewhat skeptical of him justifying a top 40 ranking or whatever he was preseason.

Query: In a keeper league, my team is all pitching and no hitting -- of 5 keepers for this year I designated King Felix, Kershaw, Strasburg, Matt Harvey and Bryce Harper.

I want to trade one of my SP keepers for a stud hitter straight up and Cano might be available. So, which SP would you trade?

If you were to dangle one out there, then I'd lean Felix as he has been severely overworked and is older. of course the offeree may see your young guns and demand one of them in exchange. If it wasn't dynasty-style, I'd probably use Harvey's hot start and get as much as I could to fill offensive gaps (that's what she said).

Harvey

I'm a Mets fan and I love him, but let's be real. He has 14 career starts at the major league level. The Mets are going nowhere, so he will not get Ws even if he does continue to pitch well. Cano is a proven commodity and the top producer at a scarce position. If you're playing for 2015, I would hold off, but if you're playing for this year and next and you can get Cano for Harvey, do it.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I don't think that a Harvey for Cano trade would be accepted. Of the other three, I tend to agree with Prickly Pedro that King Felix is the most at risk of injury and therefore, the most expendable for me.

I'm trying to balance the "win now" instinct with a more patient approach, so I part of me wants to explore trading for a reliable hitter younger than Cano.

I traded Jason Kubel for Rickie Weeks because I have depth at OF and I need help in my MI. Of course as soon as I took the deal, Giancarlo Stanton goes to the DL and Werth becomes DTD.
