Fantasy Baseball Nerd Thread

If there are any other fantasy baseball nerds here, I thought I would post this question. I play in a league that allows 4 keepers a year, and we have to decide on keepers before the draft in mid-March. We play in a 12-team, 5 x 5 category roto league with an auction draft. Each keeper retains his draft value (or $1 if he was a free agent) until after his third year as a keeper. Then his salary goes up $5/year. We also have offseason trades for the first time, but so far no one has made an offer for any of my guys.

Here are the guys I would consider keeping. Pick 4.

Mike Stanton, OF, $1
Colby Rasmus, OF, $3
Clay Buchholz, SP, $1
Neftali Feliz, RP, $3
Matt Wieters, C, $1
Pablo Sandoval, 1B/3B, $4
Brian Matusz, SP, $1
Jonathan Sanchez, SP, $4

Right now I know I want to keep Stanton and Rasmus. After that I'm leaning towards Buchholz and Feliz. Wieters is intriguing, and a catcher that can his is very valuable in our league since we have to start 2 catchers. Sandoval lost 15 lbs in the offseason but he still seems like a real risky pick. I like Sanchez's strikeouts but he's not always consistent. I just wish Buchholz threw more strikeouts. Neftali would be more valuable to me if he becomes a starter.

Which 4 would you keep?

Mike Stanton, OF, $1 -- Flat out hitter!
Pablo Sandoval, 1B/3B, $4 --LOST 40 POUNDS --KEEPER!
Brian Matusz, SP, $1 -- ready to explode. Look at some of his starts, he was lights out!
Jonathan Sanchez, SP, $4 -- May build on WS success.

I think Stanton and Rasmus are no-brainers. 74 is right about Matusz - I wouldn't let him get away. And in a league with 2 C slots I think Wieters is more valuable than any of the other guys.

then auction results

then rosters

I don't really care about relievers unless I can grab good value out of them. Pick up two or three and play waiver wire roulette once the first one goes down (how's that game of thumb war Andrew Bailey?).

Exactly, in our auction I didn't pay more than $7 for any of them while the big names went for $15 -it's stupid outside of Rivera it's a crapshoot

Relievers can secretly keep your WHIP down though if you have a couple good ones. It's not just saves, if they get three appearances in a week, they can put you over the top in a couple of other categories.

12 teams, 5x5

C Avila
1B Youk
2B Cuddyer
SS Hanley Ramirez
3B David Freese

OF Chris Young
OF Hunter Pence
OF Cameron Maybin

P Cliff Lee
P Gallaro
P Tommy Hansen
P Hiroki Kuroda
P Buccholz
P Bard
P Chris Perez
P Joe Nathan

Bench/etc:
Justin Morneau
Adam Dunn
Adam Lind
Neil Walker
Coco Crisp
Chris Heisey

I have way too many 1B but I was hedging with Dunn/Lind that one of them will actually be good.

So my big question is which 2 of Joyce, Beltran, Gardner and Choo? Assume I intend to ride out a potential Soriano bounce back season for a while in the 3rd OF spot.

I'd probably flip Choo into Pena's spot and start Beltran, Gardner, and Joyce - nuts to your assumption.

My problem is that I am going to be hurting in power categories with Pena on the bench. Even if he has a bad year, he will go 25/85 hitting behind Longoria. And if he bounces back and returns to former TB levels, he could have a monster year.

Same goes for Soriano, bare minimum he is going to give me .280, 20 hr, 80 rbi and 20 sbs. I will probably start Beltran. That leaves me Choo or Joyce; I am leaning Choo.

Gardner is going to bat ninth and does nothing other than steal. I could use his steals but not at the expense of the other 4 categories. I could replace those steals with Soriano and Choo.

After 11 seasons, our league disbanded this winter. It feels liberating, but I'm already starting to feel out-of-touch.

Pena is 33 and has only hit over .260 for a full season once - in 2007. I do expect power, though.

Soriano is 36 and not likely to return to .280 at all and his slugging and OPS have been dropping like stones. And by the way - the guy doesn't run anymore either - only 20 attempts over the last 3 years. Choo + Soriano gets you maybe 20-25 steals. Tops. That's half of Gardner.

Gardner is good for a ton of runs as well, and unlike the other 2, I expect his average to creep up. More upside.

Joyce at 27 has a lot of upside as well. Easily could hit 25 and drive in 90.

I guess it's whether you go with the known power commodity with the killer low average or the high upside guys.

I like Choo and Joyce, that's why I was so high on them headed into the draft. My problem is that my team caught guys on the way up or on the way down, with few guys right in their primes - in the OF. I don't have that one go to OF like I do at most of the other positions. Afraid I am sitting on another 3rd place team dammit.

Oh and Gardner didn't score a lot of runs last year. Unless you are dying for his 40 steals, he is a complete waste of space. Might trade him to one of the idiot Yankee fans

And Choo had 22 SBs in the two seasons prior to last. You are correct about Soriano's running, but I bet he squeaks out double digits if he stays healthy. Choo will go 20/20

If you can get healthy Choo, it'll be a great bounceback.

People forget how consistent he was and harp on the fail of 2011

32nd in MLB in runs last year, 19th in 2010. From a 9 that is a potential leadoff.

Yes, I was counting Choo at 20 or so and Soriano at 3-5 - squeaking out 10 is more likely than that .280 BA you threw out, but still not likely.

Where else are your steals going to come from? Middle IF gets you about 30. Choo 20-25. Joyce is good for 15-20 (maybe). Beltran ain't running anywhere anymore.
