Haha, that bum was on the Sox for a week or two. He got shelled once or twice so we shipped him out of town.

Interesting conspiracy theory on another board I read--the Sox offered to take Blanton off the Phils' hands if we could get a deal done with Lee (and keep him away from NY).

Blanton would be an outstanding #5 starter, but not at his salary. Kendrick, for all the shit he gets, is also a very good #5 (and if Vance Worley beats him out, all the better).

Blanton is a less expensive Dice K. Throws a lot of innings, rarely hurt.

That's a killer rotation. Thanks for playing, NL.

Yeah, that's pretty stupid good. Last 50 years is retarded, but it is certainly the best in the last few years.

Only competition is Braves rotation circa Glavine, Smoltz, Maddux, Neagle? Can you name anything else close to this?

Other than the fact that a lights out Kevin Millwood was also in that 98 Braves staff, your analysis of the Phillies would be right on if it were Oswalt of 5 years ago and Hamels were better than you think he is.

And yes, going back to 1960, I can come up with quite a few. Start with a staff that had Drysdale and Koufax and Osteen and Sutton, or the Orioles staff that had 4 20 game winners - Palmer, Dobson, McNally and Cuellar. Gooden, Fernandez, Aguilera, Ojeda and Darling. There are a few other Dodgers staffs and you could add the staff with Avery, Smoltz, Glavine, Maddux (circa 93). The As had three, with Mulder, Zito and Hudson in their primes, Stewart, Welch, Moore and Vida Blue, Catfish Hunter and Ken Holtzman.

I am sure I could come up with a few more.

Fans of AL East teams are strikingly similar to SEC fans.

There is only one AL East team on that list, and it is the 1971 Orioles ferchrissakes.

eagle9903 {l Wrote}:So yeah, I was arguing with a friend from BC who was stubbornly saying how lester, buccholz, beckett, and lackey was still better, on paper, than Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Oswalt. I kind of conflated his stupid argument into this thread. Apologies to all.

The Sox rotation is not likely to measure up at all, but it could. I don't think Lackey or Becket will pull their weight, but it is certainly arguable that Buchholz and Lester were comparable to Lee and Hallifay last season. If the Sox rotation all have excellent seasons, they will be comparable.

All of this assumes that Hamels pitches very well and that Oswalt's arm doesn't fall off.

Maybe that Dice K for Beltran trade is really happening! Screw it - start 4 outfielders.

Questionable AL numbers. His old pitching coach from Oakland is in Boston though.

The Yankees are hurting after this one. I bet they try to trade for Carlos Zambrano.

The Red Sox have already already countered a possible signing of Zambrano by signing Bobby Jenks:

Nitpicking but Zambrano's under contract for two more years for about $18 million per year. He has a vesting option for 2013 but it's highly unlikely that he'll finish anywhere in the Cy Young voting.

apparently. apparently also trading pence, victorino, blanton, pierre and wigginton.

I'm OK with all of this, Lee is the one I want to trade the least but probably has the most value.
