Tony Sanchez Moved Up to AA

Postby Dirtywater on Wed Nov 24, 2010 1:24 pm

Tony has been moved up to the Altoona Curve, Altoona, PA in AA. He has been steadily moving up from the rookie league to last year at A+ in Bradenton, Fla. Its a good bet he will eventually move on to AAA and the bigs (Pirates).

With the draft last night, it made me think of Tony Sanchez. Apparently he just got bumped to AAA but hasn't been that great in AA

2009 first-round and 4th overall pick Tony Sanchez was promoted to AAA this evening.

Sanchez has been a disappointment since being drafted, especially during his time in Double-A. He really had a rough year last season and hasn’t blown anyone away this year either. He has been much better of late, however. This year with the Altoona Curve, Sanchez has hit .277/.373/.387 with no homers and 13 doubles in 39 games.

The on-base percentage is good, and the power is not. Still, I guess the Pirates decided it was time to move on and see what he can do in Triple-A (which has a crowded catching situation, but Sanchez should see the majority of at-bats). His performance there for the rest of the year may impact whether or not the Pirates exercise Rod Barajas‘ $3.5 million 2013 option.

The lack of power is strange, but IIRC he is very strong defensively, which is all you need to be an MLB catcher.

I believe he's Rule V eligible after the year so it looks more like a move to see if he's actually worth a damn, and thus worthy of being on the 40-man roster, instead of having him develop for a little while longer. Regardless, you'd probably want more offensive production out of a highly touted catcher than what he's delivering.
