Valentine to return to ESPN as baseball analyst


NEW YORK (AP)—Bobby Valentine is returning to ESPN as an analyst on “Baseball Tonight” for the league championship series and World Series.

ESPN announced Tuesday that the former New York Mets manager will assume a larger role in the 2010 season.

Valentine recently ended a six-year run as manager of the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan’s Pacific League.

The 59-year-old Valentine says he’s “been following major league baseball closely from afar, and look forward to delving back into those conversations.”

Valentine led the Mets to the World Series in 2000, where they lost to the Yankees in five games. He previously worked for ESPN in 2003.

If it wasn't for one of the craziest plays in NFL history and a pass that still hasn't conclusively been determined a lateral or a forward pass, Rob Johnson leads the Bills to victory. Somehow revisionist history always eschews this fact. And Wikipedia says he led what should've been the game-winning drive with one shoe.

Of course this totally obscures the fact that the only reason Johnson started the game was because the Bills gave up a 1st and another pick for him and Ralph Wilson was like Al Davis is now, only Ralph was actually alive when he was making personnel decisions.

OK, but...

1. Flutie got FUCKED in that case - all he did was lead his team to such a good record that the last game of their season was irrelevant. Then RJ comes in during garbage time and beats the Colts and they start him in the playoffs? Fucking stupid personnel move. The Titans' play (and the non-call on the clearly-forward pass) was probably karma for that bullshit.

2. Remember that RJ wasn't exactly lighting it up that day. The Bills scored 16 points. If you have the QB that led your team to 10-5 when the games MATTERED in there, instead of some pretty-boy no-talent hack, they probably score more than 16 and the "lateral" isn't even a possibility.

3. Wade Phillips is an ass who didn't have his team prepared for trick kick return plays, either, even though that was Tennessee's only hope at that point.

I'm still scarred from that play - the Bills haven't made the playoffs since.
