Nice..

His uppercut HR swing is Rico Petrocelliesque.

He will hit 35 at Fenway + 125 RBI.

Smart.

Re: Red Sox on the Jayson Werth Trail

Uggla is nuts!

Who was that stupid Red Sox second baseman who turned down huge contract only to get nothing?

Jody Reed?

The Marlins offered second baseman Dan Uggla a four-year, $48 million extension, according to major league sources.

Needless to say, the team's stunned Uggla didn't accept.

Well, there are reasons. There are always reasons.

Marlins at a glance
Looking for the latest on the Marlins? Get the inside slant, stats, scores, schedules and more scoops right here.
Uggla, the only second baseman in history with four 30-homer seasons, has slightly lower rate stats than outfielder Jayson Werth over the past three years, but more home runs, extra-base hits and RBI. Werth, a free agent, almost certainly will command more than four years, $48 million.
A four-year deal for Uggla would amount to a three-year extension on top of his final year of arbitration, making him a free agent at 34. Uggla likely would seek at least a five-year contract as a free agent after next season, delaying his next deal to 36.

The Atlanta Braves acquired All-Star second baseman Dan Uggla from the Florida Marlins for utilityman Omar Infante and pitcher Mike Dunn on Tuesday in the first trade of the general managers meetings.

Marlins maybe getting John Buck.

Great steal for Atlanta when they sign him. WOW!

Adam Dunn looking 3/40M..WOW!

Yankees need Lee and Dunn....Swisher upgrade.

Agreed Dunn would fit for the Yanks (might hit 200 HRs in that little league park) but where exactly would he play?

Not DH.

Seriously, one of his biggest things is that he want to play the field. Which kinda sucks for any team that gets him because he's probably one of the leagues worst corner outfielders at this point and probably only a average to below average defender at first.

Yankees should offer Jeter 2 years at 15M, or let him ge his 3000th hit in Pittsburgh.

Posting starts for Tsuyoshi Nishioka

THIS IS THE GUY they need. Jeter's range was so bad, that he should be switched to third, but now A=Rod is also 35 and a bad hip and hammy.

Cliff Lee, Carl Crawford and Jayson Werth headline this offseason's free-agent class. ESPN.com breaks down the top players available and the teams that plan to go shopping.

TOKYO -- Japanese shortstop Tsuyoshi Nishioka is free to move to Major League Baseball via the posting system.

Nishioka's team in Japan made the announcement Wednesday.

MLB teams will have four business days to bid for the negotiating rights to the 26-year-old Nishioka, who helped the Lotte Marines win the 2010 Japan Series.

The posting system allows big league clubs to bid for negotiating rights to Japanese players who have yet to become free agents.

Nishioka led the Pacific League with a .346 batting average this season and had 206 hits, becoming the first Pacific League player to get 200 hits since Ichiro Suzuki.

It is not an impossibility. Jeter is a $6-8M ballplayer for 2 years... age 39.

My guess is he gets $18M for 3 --or $38M too much.

You need shortstops to gobble up the 1-2 hits up the middle and in the hole with the overwhelming number of righty batters and that is 250+ outs Jeter is not getting to.

Gold Glove doesn't include range and getting to those balls..

The Yankees are fxcking fools.

Jeter is insane.

He wants a 4th year?

I would give him 2 at 15M TOTAL -- and say sign or walk.

Yankee fan since 1959.

The INSANE IDIOT Yankees have reportedly made Jeter an offer for three years and $45 million. But Jeter is seeking a deal lasting at least four years and preferably longer, a source told ESPNNewYork.com's Wallace Matthews last week.

Jeter, 36, earned a sixth career gold glove in 2010. But his batting average dropped to .270 and his slugging percentage fell to .370 -- both well below his career averages of .314 and .452, respectively.

The HR figures at Yankee Stadium took a pretty big hit this year (about .2 less HR per game as compated to 2009), even with A.J. Burnett being so awful and hosting so many games against Toronto and Boston. It's still a hitter's park for lefties, but the ball did not sneak out to left field this year.

Welcome to the era of Jared (however you spell his last name). I have to agree that giving a 4 year deal to a 32 year old catcher is a bad idea. Although true, why didn't they dump Ortiz and sign Victor and figure he could DH the last couple years? Some bad planning around Fenway lately.

Zach Duke was once a top lefty...nice move by Zona....

Jeter is still insane... a $7M or less player getting $15 for 3.... a bonus $30M.

I would bring back Fred Stanley.

Derek is simply lost contact with spaceship earth. WTF would pay him more than $8M and more than 2 years?

Zach Duke is a marginal long reliver in the AL. With the NL West's awful lineups he could be a 5th starter for them.

Victor Martinez is a GREAT hitter as a catcher. He's a mediocre DH. His best season was similar to the two mediocre ones that Ortiz put up the past two years.

Speaking of 5th starters.

Dodgers sign Jon Garland for

Archive
The winter meetings are still a week away, but already the Los Angeles Dodgers have solidified their starting rotation. The club signed right-hander Jon Garland to a one-year contract with a base salary of $5 million on Friday.

Garland will be the Dodgers' fifth starter, giving them five pitchers who each won 10 or more games last season.

More From ESPNLosAngeles.com

For more news, notes and analysis of the Dodgers, check out Dodger Thoughts from Jon Weisman. Blog

Garland, 31, will also be eligible to earn up to $3 million in performance-based incentives this season. The contract includes an $8 million club option for 2012, which would vest if he pitches more than 190 innings in 2011.

This will be Garland's second stint with the Dodgers. He went 3-2 with a 2.72 ERA over six starts in 2009 after he was acquired at the Aug. 31 waiver deadline from Arizona in exchange for infielder Tony Abreu.

Since the start of the 2002 season, the Valencia, Calif., native, who attended nearby Kennedy High of Granada Hills, ranks fifth among all big league pitchers with 292 games started, eighth with 121 wins and ninth with 1,842 2/3 innings pitched.

"We're very pleased to have Jon join this group and give us five very strong starters going into spring training," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said in a statement released by the team. "We saw what Jon was capable of down the stretch in 2009 and again last year within our division. Year after year, he takes the ball 30-plus times and gives his team a chance to win every time out."

IT'S L.A., AND IT'S LIVE
For more coverage of the complete Los Angeles sports scene, visit ESPNLA.com. »

Last season he was the Opening Day starter for San Diego and set career-best marks with a 3.47 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 33 starts with the Padres. He is primarily known as an innings-eater, having averaged more than 32 starts and 200 innings in each of his nine full big league seasons. Garland is 131-114 with a 4.32 ERA in his 11-year career.

The Dodgers' starting five for the 2011 season -- Clayton Kershaw, Chad Billingsley, Hiroki Kuroda, Ted Lilly and Garland -- had a cumulative 2010 ERA of 3.39 (371 ER/986.0 IP) and a .234 opponents' batting average (857-for-3663) would have led all major league starting rotations.

NEW YORK -- Negotiations between the Yankees and Derek Jeter are at a standstill until Jeter and his agent, Casey Close, "drink the reality potion," according to a source close to the negotiations.

According to the source, a baseball industry executive who has knowledge of both sides' position, the Yankees are not budging from the three-year, $45 million offer they made to Jeter earlier this month, nor has Jeter moved off his demand for a longer contract believed to be in the area of $23-$25 million per season.

The Captain In Photos
With Derek Jeter a first-time free agent, we look back on The Captain's greatest moments in pinstripes. Photo gallery

No talks took place over the holiday weekend and none are currently scheduled. Neither Yankees general manager Brian Cashman nor Close immediately returned messages seeking comment early Monday.

Last week, Cashman told ESPN New York: "We understand his contributions to the franchise and our offer has taken them into account. We've encouraged him to test the market and see if there's something he would prefer other than this. If he can, fine. That's the way it works."

A team source said Cashman's statement was not intended to be an ultimatum, but an invitation to comparison-shop around the league, with the belief that no other team would match or exceed the Yankees' offer.

The baseball industry source said the Yankees have provided Jeter and Close with detailed statistical and market analysis to support their contract offer, including comparisons between Jeter and other shortstops and middle infielders throughout baseball.

That is the way Jeter's last contract, the 10-year, $189 million deal that expired with the end of the 2010 World Series, was negotiated, based on Jeter's contention and the Yankees concurrence that Jeter was the second-best shortstop in the game, behind Alex Rodriguez, who had just signed a 10-year, $252 million deal with the Texas Rangers.

Want to get the scoop on everything in pinstripes? ESPNNewYork.com has you covered. Blog

This time, the Jeter side is said to not want Jeter's value to be judged against that of other shortstops, preferring to base his worth on his legacy as an all-time great Yankee. The next highest-paid shortstop, Florida's Hanley Ramirez, is nearly 10 years younger than the 36-year-old Jeter, hits for more power (21 HRs last year) and in 2010, hit 30 points higher, .300 to .270. He will be paid $11 million in 2011.

"They've changed the rules this time around," the source said of the Jeter camp.

The Rangers offering Cliff Lee $24M for 5 and $120M.

The Yankees have to go 18% more for the Chuckie Schumer and Gillebrand and NYC Welfare Queen taxes --you know city, state, local, sales, cost of living, real estate...etc. etc.

I say the Yankess go 7 years and $200M. One or more year is not gonna do it anyway.

Yankees have to beat Texas by $10M a year and $35M for 5 years ---$175M---- that is a firestorm of WTF?

I say the Yankees are now 5-1. Texas is young, Arkansas is closer and has a great young team in the really weak AL West.

Lee should win 20 by accident in the AL West.

I would bet the $24M a year is way more than enough.

If I was Jeter, I would swallow my insanity and sign faster than a June Bug on a fire ant.

The Yankees are giving him one more year than he deserves and 2X+ the salary.

45M/3 is a joke.. Yankee money.

The Giants quickly signed Tejada and that gave Jeter a wake up call..on how much less he is worth.

Grienke has 2 years left at $27M and he wants out of KC Minor Leagues.

Yankees will get him since no matter what, I think Lee fits Texas and $24M is a load with no state tax and no NYC bullshit and the AL West and a great young team with talent. Lee is from Arkansas. Hell NetJets can get you home by midnight and two days off at home if you write that into your contract deal after you pitch 9???

Crawford and Theo are yapping. Red Sox could use both Werth and Crawford.

Say what you want about the Cy Young voting...the best big game AL East monster Pitcher is John Lester.

The Sox have starting pitching, getting Crawford would make them really tough.

Adrian Gonzalez and Prince Fielder also YBW looking for cash.

Grienke has a NTC to the Yankees and Red Sox IIRC. Guy had anxiety problems in the cackling hotbed of KC so I don't think a major market best suits him.

Sources: The New York Yankees informed Derek Jeter's agent, Casey Close, on Thursday that the team was willing to improve its original three-year, $45 million offer, according to sources close to the negotiations.

OUT THEIR MINDS!

The Associated Press reported that the team did submit an improved offer but could not say whether the money or years had been improved.

There have been several reports in recent days that the team was open to slightly increasing the number of dollars in its offer, though not necessarily guaranteeing more than three years.

A baseball official with knowledge of the talks said the two sides are making "progress." The official said Tuesday's meeting in Tampa was crucial to dial down the rhetoric.

The two sides have been talking from late Wednesday into Thursday, continuing the face-to-face conversation they had in Tampa.

The official added that the sides could talk more before the winter meetings, but if they don't they could meet in Orlando.

Senior writer Jayson Stark covers Major League Baseball for ESPN.com. Information from ESPNNewYork.com's Wallace Matthews and Andrew Marchand was used in this report.

Rivera gets $15M for 2.

The Big Bomber I wanted on the Yankees 2 years ago will be driving deep in Sox Land for Ozzie.

Dunn 4/56 is a great deal. Dunn is a weapon who playing for the Nats with no protection was unreal.

Posada and whoever is not a Dunn.

I just don't understand why everyone loves Werth so much. Is there some sort of new-age statistical explanation for this? His basic numbers don't seem worth the hype.

I'd say he's a great all around player. He was top 10 in the NL in a ton of different categories: runs, walks, OBP, slugging, OPS, doubles, total bases. He's also very solid defensively. I can absolutely see why he's a desired commodity.

Werth, Dunn Chicago and Crawford.

Crawford surprised me with his lack of big time power in that Tampa Dome?

Werth could hit 45 at Fenway. Crawford in the outfield.

I wonder if Theo is gonna make a run at Adrian Gonzalez in walk year now?

Red Sox Starting Pitching if healthy is superb. Maybe Soriano to help Pap?
