I took exception to the gloss that they were based purely on outspending the field. In particular, that they threw $$$ at free agents. The facts don't bear that out.

Which is why I have a problem with you ignoring the TMV and disregarding the economics of the game in the mid-1990s. $2-3 million per year was a fairly substantial amount when the average league salary is $1.1 million, as it was in 1996.
