ACC Tourney

Postby pick6pedro on Tue May 25, 2010 10:10 am

Don't know where BigBatLickerNick is with this - but the ACC Tourney starts in Greensboro tomorrow. BC is the last (#8) seed so doesn't have much chance to win their group to make the final (which may very well be necessary for an NCAA spot).

Wed - #1 UVA v. #8 BC noon
Thurs - #4 Miami v. #8 BC noon
Fri - #5 FSU v. #8 BC noon

Of course some may remember that 2010 was Fenway's 2nd shot at the tourney after bricking with a "scheduling conflict" for the 2009 event. I don't recall why 2010 was changed as well. FSG sucks - that's probably why.

I don't think that BC has to win the group to earn an NCAA berth. It is very possible to win 2 games and lose the group (in fact, that's exactly what BC did last year). I do think that BC has to win 2 games to feel comfortable. It's possible that 1 will get them in, but their chances will be largely dependent on the number of at-large spots that are available. Incidentally, having watched a bunch of their games, in my opinion BC's case is a lot stronger on paper than perhaps it should be.

I think that there may be another variability at play here. If UConn indeed hosts, that could help our case, although the NCAA would never admit this. The NCAA would presumably love the prospect growing college baseball in New England, and a regional with traditional athletic rivals BC and UConn plus an SEC or SOCon power would certainly get the attention sports fans in the region. Throw in a Dartmouth or the America East champion in for good measure as the 4 seed, and they'd have a fascinating regional.

McGovern strikeout, down to our last out.

:81

EDIT: I'm watching on gamecast, so it's unclear exactly when this happened, but a passed ball took the runners to 2nd and 3rd - a single could tie it.

Admittedly, not many. But I can't imagine a guy who's batting average is .150 can be that good.

He's 4-28 this year, with one extra base hit.

You couldn't possibly be qualified to comment on the postseason if you haven't seen most of the regular season. Please prompty leave this thread, you semi-fan. Thanks in advance.

Baseball = individual game. You can learn a lot about a player through his stats.
Hockey = team game. Stats don't tell you nearly as much about a player. See all-american defensemen Carl Sneep.

I will buy the argument that baseball tells you more through stats than hockey, to a point. Defense in baseball is similarly difficult to measure.

But baseball is by no means an "individual game." I could have sworn you supported the view that ERA is not determinative because it depends on the 8 guys behind you.

Baseball is certainly much more an individual game than hockey. Stop nitpicking.

Who's nitpicking? Tennis is an individual game, played by individuals. Baseball is played by teams. Hence, a team game.

BC has taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an Anston Double, a sac bunt, and a throwing error by the pitcher, and a ground out. This is unequivocally a must-win.

Holy shit. BC's bullpen implodes and gives up 5 in the top of the ninth. Then, the offense picks them up with 5 in the bottom of the ninth, capped off with a 2-out 3-run bomb by Spatola. This kid has icewater in his veins. We go to the 10th.

BC walks off in the 12th on a home run by Andrew Lawrence. Moran picks up the win with 3+ innings of scoreless relief. BC toasted a runner in the top of the 12th to preserve the tie game.
