I like college softball. Always have. The game is getting more coverage than ever before on the cable networks this season, esp. the regional FOX channels (college baseball is getting tons more coverage as well). ESPN now has a couple of games on the "mother ship" in primetime every weekend, a few on the deuce, and at least 3 or 4 on ESPNU every week. There appears to be a price that the networks have set for that coverage, at least in softball. Good college softball tends to be low scoring small ball pitching duels. But this season I have seen very few of the typical 1-0 shutouts with the one run coming on a drag bunt for a hit, a steal, a sacrifice bunt over to third, and a sac fly to score the winning run. Methinks they have messed with the ball. The past couple of weeks I have seen at least seven games where the 2 teams have combined for 12+ runs. I've also never seen as many 8-0 mercy rule games end at the middle of the fifth. I bet many teams break their season records for team HRs this year. And a juiced ball doesn't just translate into more homers-- it also accounts for the many rockets that scream into the gap and bang on one hop off the wall before anyone can get over to them, so doubles are probably way up as well as a result. It also means that even ground balls get through the infield quicker, so there are more singles. OBP and slugging pct. records will also probably be set this year. Of course, where the networks are behind this and the NCAA is in on it there hasn't been a peep about it on any of the games that I have seen, and the public doesn't care enough to notice.

The college softball has been juiced this season for TV. There, I said it.

Everytime I see Beckett pitch live, even though he's my favorite pitcher in baseball, it makes me want to throw things at him when he just stands on the mound. Hurry up and throw the damn baseball.
