Oh, no, I certainly believe that getting rid of Gonzo and all of his stats is a net plus for the Red Sox in the long run. I also believe that despite being one of the best hitters in baseball, he will never sniff a ring.

I agree with the latter but that's mainly because he's on the Dodgers and, if they're willing to take on those three albatrosses, well, let's just say I'm not too confident in their player management skills.

Well that's absolutely true. I would go one step further though and say that Gonzo will always be a good enough player to take up too much payroll on any team where his personality has a chance to be successful. He is the classic guy that will do well in places that pay no attention to him, yet in those places he is 1/3 of the team payroll.

Baseball managers should, at least in theory, have less of an effect on the outcome of the games than football coaches. Whereas football coaches are involved in every single moment of the game, managers can typically sit on their ass for five innings before making a big decision. A lot of their job is left up to player execution. And, no, I don't consider shifts or that such to be a big decision.

Yeah, I suppose all you need from a baseball manager is someone who can manage a bullpen and set a lineup and rotation.

Elvii and I won't agree on these things, because he doesn't believe in them, but I would also add proper use of the bunt, hit and run, and steal. He acknowledged defensive positioning, and although I agree shifts aren't a huge decision, batter to batter adjustments are pretty important. Managers primarily need to be baby sitters in today's MLB, which is why dim witted nice guys like Francona, who don't demonstrate much knowledge of the game, are able to have success - players play for them.

I'd argue that a good manager can do certain things in a game, particularly with the bullpen and baserunning, to have an impact on the score of 20-25 games a year. In the grand scheme of 162 games, that doesn't seem like much, but the difference between 15-5 and 5-15 in those games can often make the difference in making the playoffs. Ask Buck Showalter.

And not alienate a locker room. Thankfully the Red Sox employed one that could do none of the three last year.

Cody Ross, Anibel Sanchez and check please. They won't suck if the pitchers get their heads back on straight with Farrell, otherwise, they are screwed.

Anibal would be nice. That would leave them with:
-Lester
-Buchholz
-Sanchez
-Doubront
-Morales? Lackey?

I still think they'd need to add one more starter.

I would be okay with them re-signing Ross for RF.

I like Rubby De la Rosa for the 5th spot.

Supposedly the Red Sox have discussed a Lester for Wil Myers trade.

Also, the Jonny Gomes era begins. Not exciting stats wise, but he's supposed to be a big clubhouse leader.

Three years/$39M for Napoli is a pretty good signing. I figured he'd be the kind of guy who got a little too much for a little too long. He gives them some of the power that they need and doesn't tie up the roster or payroll.

Shane Victorino, 3 years $39 million.

A friend put it best: "This is like when you're playing video game baseball and trade away all of your bad contracts and then sign whoever is left on the FA list until better guys become FAs. Except you can't sim 3 years away in real life."

Solid use of newly acquired $$

Victorino is Coco Crisp with slightly more pop and a lot more cash (double the annual average value of Coco's contract with Oakland).

I dislike the Victorino signing as much as I like the Napoli signing, although both probably got paid more than they could get elsewhere. As claver noted, they didn't hold onto that extra cash for very long.

The Uehara signing was fantastic. Napoli was good not great. Flyin' Hawaiian was Julio Lugo-esque.

Agree for the most part. Would just note that Theo gave Lugo the money before he fell off a cliff. The current overrated GM gave Victorino the money after he fell off a cliff.

I call this a good signing if Dempster proves he can pitch in the American League. If he duplicates his national league stats, fantastic signing. With Farrell back, that could be a great rotation.
