I went to a Sox game in Philly a couple years ago. It's nice ballpark and Hop Devil is on tap.

It's because you descend from Fishtown. Your description was self-prophetic.

The Red Sox are getting their act together now that the starters are pitching well. There are still a lot of question marks, most notably Buchholz, but the bullpen is surprisingly strong and the bats are doing what they're supposed to be doing.

For all the talk about the Sox's pathetic start, it must be noted that the Yankees are barely above them in the standings and playing mediocre at best .500 baseball.

Are they AL east standings misprinted upside down?

Baltimore Orioles 27 14 .659 -- 12-9 15-5 13-7 8-1 4-6 Won 5 7-3
Tampa Bay Rays 25 16 .610 2.0 15-5 10-11 11-9 3-3 10-3 Won 1 5-5
Toronto Blue Jays 23 18 .561 4.0 12-9 11-9 6-10 8-3 7-5 Won 4 6-4
New York Yankees 21 19 .525 5.5 12-9 9-10 9-9 6-5 5-4 Lost 1 5-5
Boston Red Sox 19 21 .475 7.5 9-11 10-10 5-9 10-7 3-4 Won 1 7-3

The Sox are going to be competing for a spot at the top of the standings by the end of July, setting themselves up for the possibility of another monumental collapse down the stretch.

I wonder what they seriously expect to get for him. Missed 100+ games the past three seasons (including this one), OBP and OPS trending downward, and backloaded contract means he's no longer a value ($12 million salary this year).

I also am very curious about his value. The flip side is plus defensively at multiple positions, he's an OBP guy, and, if you discount this year as a small sample size, he's still has average to above-average power for a corner infielder.

I imagine the Sox would kick a few dollars in there for him and he has something like a $13M team option after this year. I don't think it vests if he gets traded but I'm not 100% positive on that.

Doesn't suprise me as they lacked any real depth and injuries are going to happen. The bullpen is still outstanding, though.

This. If Bard wants to be a starter, he needs a year in AAA to find the strike zone regularly.

I think it would be Joba, because Ankiel did it to himself.

Edit: Good stuff Claver. Next up is the announcement of surgery in two months.

I know, I :81 .

The Baltimore pitching has been very good this series, but aside from the Bard debacle the other night, the Red Sox pitching continues to be strong. I see this little slide as the Red Sox fill-ins regressing to the mean.

Sox have to figure out the pitching, but damn they have a ton of good young offensive talent. This Middlebrooks is going to be a superstar, and Kalish has all the tools. Salty is finally getting it. Add in Ellsbury, Pedroia, Gonzo and I guess Crawford, and Lavarnway at DH and all you need is Iglesias to start hitting and they are in good shape for a long time.

Now they need a couple of arms.
