MLB Season Prediction Thread

Postby BCEagle74 on Mon Mar 01, 2010 1:31 pm

I been half right 2X when i picked the 2007 Bosox and the 2009 Yankees. 2-6 picking the chalk and I missed the other NL winner. This has been a source of extreme embarrassment to 74 and someone has to be killed.

Here is the picking set-up Template and picks are due Opening Day:

Just copy and paste and then fill in your own losers. I will change my selections here, but never underestimate the immense power of Eric Hinske.....Red Sox...2007....Tampa Bay.....2008...New York Yankees.....2009....Atlanta Braves....2010???

American League:

AL EAST: New York Yankees
AL CENTRAL: Detroit Tigers
AL WEST: Texas Rangers
AL WILD CARD: Boston Red Sox

ALDS: Detroit 3 Boston 2

ALCS: New York 4 Detroit 3

National League:

NL EAST: Philadelphia Phillies
NL CENTRAL: St. Louis Cardinals
NL WEST: Los Angeles Dodgers
NL WILD CARD: Atlanta Braves

NLDS: Phillies 3 Cardinals 1
NLDS: Braves 3 Dodgers 2
NLCS: Braves 4 Phillies 1

I don't think that the Sox have the bats to win the AL East, but given pitching and defense, they will be front runners in any short series.

I haven't figured it out yet, but Adrian Gonzalez would be a huge Babe Ruth type of trade since this guy has 7 or mroe great years left.

Not sold on the Yankees bullpen, outfield or catching.

Lotta age there.

The Red Sox, Tampa Bay and Texas Rangers have some superb prospects on the farm.

My sleeper guy who will go free agent in 2011 who always played on bad teams and had no one protecting him was Adam Dunn.

i would love to see him pound in Yankee Stadium and Cashman get him.

You get 180 whiffs, but with someone batting behind him, you will get 45 dingers and 125 RBI.

He averages 40-98 with 2 shit teams in the Reds and Washington.

Granderson, Swisher and others do not impress me.

The Dodgers are an absolute mess and I don't blame Manny(even though he's not helping). They need an ace and didn't go get one, now they're counting on a 22 year old to be the man. Hope it works out.

I agree w/TW- If the Sox trade for Gonzalez or someone comparable, they are the favorites to win in the playoffs, but the Yankees will come out of the AL East. If the Sox have a pitching weakness it's in the pen, where the Yankees seem exceptionally strong. In my opinion, the Sox bullpen will determine whether its a 95 win team or an 85 win team, because they are going to play a lot of games decided by 2 or fewer runs (and I mean about 110 of them).

The Tigers win the central and can go toe to toe w/anyone in the playoffs with Porcello and Verlander (provided that 2008 was the aberration, not 2009). I like Texas (just over Seattle) out of the west, but they won't go anywhere because they are from the west (the Angels were the last pennant winner from the west [2002]; before that it was the 1990 bash brothers.

The Cards, Phillies and Dodgers take the divisions. No clue on the wildcard.

Billingsley is their ace. He was terrible at the end of last season but overall he's their best starter and he should bounce back this season.

You predicted them to win the Division and the Series as well as sweep the major awards. So now you're admitting your prediction isn't as much of a prediction as it is wishful thinking from a fanboy? Duly noted.

I guess calling me a fanboy is an insult...

It is wishful thinking that everybody stays healthy. For all you know Beckett could go down tomorrow with a torn rotator cuff. Or Sabathia. You just don't know.

As I said, the team can get more than 90 wins should it stay healthy (and perform as expected)...and once a team gets to the postseason anything can happen.

And I'd love to hear who you think in the NL has significantly better chances of winning the CY Young over Johan. Reyes for MVP will be difficult should he be out for the first couple of weeks(as expected), but there isn't a more dynamic player in the NL than Reyes in my opinion.

And yes, all this happening is unlikely. But it is a prediction.

Calling you a fanboy was a way of saying "Pssstt...your bias is showing." It's still amazing to me the lack of sense of humor you consistently show.

Interesting you mention Sabathia and Beckett - what you don't mention is they have plenty of quality pitching behind them. Johan does not. Plus Johan is coming off of surgery, the other two are not. As far as who has a "significantly better" chance of winning the Cy Young, sure Johan is right up there. Lincecum, Carpenter, Halladay, and Haren are right there too - did you "love" seeing those names? Darkhorses like Broxton, Lee, maybe even a Josh Johnson or Wandy Rodriguez could make a run as well.

Reyes will not be MVP. Not only is he going to have less games to do it in, he'd really have to put up some spectacular numbers during that short time. Not to mention his team would have to win some games - something you quickly backed down from.

While the point is well taken re: the "value of wins," there has been so much talk denigrating the statistic that pretty soon it will be "money ball" to sign winners. Wins matter, and knowing how to win matters. This is not but ERA and WHIP should be considered before looking at wins.

Exactly. Wins clearly matter. But they aren't nearly the best measurement for the quality of a pitcher. Lincecum won 15 games last year even though the vast majority of his stats were better than from 2008 (when he won 18 games).
