Interesting to say the least. I've never been a fan, but as a #4...

That'd be an impressive rotation. Good thing they don't have any big bats to go along with it, or else they could be really good.

Well, the folks who are reporting on this Lackey deal are also saying that this frees up Clay Buchholz as part of a deal for Adrian Gonzalez. I don't know if that's really in the works though, but it would be teh win.

I bet you miss NEP being around so he can tell you that Adrian Gonzalez sucks because he knows nothing about him.

I do. If he were here, he'd be reminding me that batting average is the only stat that matters so the Sox don't need to worry about replacing Jason Bay's 36 home runs.

Wow this team could really start to round into shape. Gonzalez would be a monster in Fenway. He hit 40 HR last year, but only 12 were at home - that park dragged his total down.

The Sox thinking here is that they were second in runs last year, and the going from Lowrie/Green/Gonzalez to Scutaro offsets going from Bay to Hermida/Cameron/other Cameron-esque player.

Additionally, they go with the philosophy that defending runs is the same as creating runs, so signing Lackey and letting Bay go somewhat offset.

Personally, this smells of "Spend Bay's money on Lackey, trade Clay and others for (bat, probably Gonzalez), trade/waive Lowell, be vastly improved with the same payroll."

1) This makes Buck expendable.
2) Tito better be ready to fight whenever it's time to take Lackey out of the game.
3) Lackey looks like Phil Mickelson.
4) Mods, please move this thread to the mythical baseball board.

Angels going full speed at Halladay and also looking to sign Matsui. I like what they do out there.

They'll have to trade the farm for Halladay now, since they won't have a fallback option.

This is a good move by the Sox to shore up their rotation. Lackey is also a big game pitcher in the mold of Beckett.

Now to address this statement about scoring and preventing runs being the same...it isn't. Yes, I know that Pythagoras is considered far more important than Casey Stengel these days, and I'm not saying that you (BUC) did anything more than suggest that this is the Sox philosophy, rather than endorse it, but it is flawed. The reason is that there are going to be games when even your best pitchers get hit. In those games, you'll need to push across some runs. By adopting the "we don't need to score lots of runs if we keep the other team off the board" approach, you'll tend to lose a disproportionate number of those slugfest games. Particuarly in the AL East, this can happen quite often.

I suppose it is like have a football team with a great defense and running game with no QB or deep threat. When the defense fails and you're down 21 points in the 2nd half, you won't win many games with no passing.

Yes, so is #3 Chris Knight/Peter Brady or Donny Osmond?

correct. but they have such a strong farm system that i think they can pull it off. they will have to give up saunders, aybar and prospects just to have a discussion and get in the door. and aybar would be a huge loss, that kid is on the verge of stardom. but they have brandon wood to fill his spot and they have money to spend. so we'll see.

I disagree, half because the Red Sox were the 2nd best offense in the league last year and half because building a team to score tons of runs at the expense of pitching is the same as pitching at the expense of runs. You can argue that "the team will lose on a bad day" regardless of how they're built. If the '27 Yankees gave up 8 runs, they had a pretty good chance of losing. If the 2010 Red Sox score 1 run, they also have a good shot of losing. It's the same both ways.

If this goes through, it'll be fun to see Beckett, Lackey, and Dice-K compete to see who can show up to spring training the fattest. However, it would be a very good rotation when healthy, especially since Buchholz could be ready to emerge as a legit #2-3 starter as soon as this year.

The position players are currently:

1B: Youkilis
2B: Pedroia
3B: Beltre???
SS: Scutaro
LF: Hermida???
CF: Ellsbury
RF: Drew
C : Martinez
DH: Ortiz

If Papi doesn't return to 30/100 form, which is a big "if", then that lineup won't have much pop. In fact, they'd probably strand runners at a historic rate given all the high OBP guys. I'd agree that the dream scenario is to sign Lackey and Beltre and then trade Buchholz + prospects for an impact bat.

A whiz at defense, positionally average hitter. He fits the Red Sox mold.

I think that any team that has Youkilis and Martinez has a fair amount of pop.

He is probably the best defensive 3b in the majors. Or one of the "elite" defensive 3b's. Theo has always loved him and IIRC went after him in 2004. If the Sox get him they are going to have one of the best left sides of the infield in terms of defense in the majors. He's been a better than average hitter even though he is hitting in Safeco, as well. OBP is a little rough, but he can mash the ball and most of his HRs go to left, which fits nice for Fenway. Hurt last year but should rebound and is only 30 on Opening Day so it's not like it will be a Lowell situation.

crazy phillies rumor today re: halladay.

lee plus prospect to blue jays for halladay, mariners involved somehow.

angels might be screwed.

It doesn't make sense and sounds completely made up, except apparently Lee is unwilling to sign a long term deal and insists on testing the FA market, and Halladay does not have that caveat.

Apparently he has a physical scheduled for today or tomorrow.
