Boston has beaten the other US cities to become a finalist for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Experts are calling it a favorite to get the bid. This seems like a tremendously bad idea.

Jon FIsh of Suffolk Construction is behind this because he gets all the contracts and he stands to make billions from it. So maybe they can build the temporary 60,000 seat stadium by his house in Hingham.

this transportation system can't survive a pink hat game or the fact that it's cold out

hosting the olympics sounds like a tremendous idea

There will be an Olympic Bid Community Meeting in Southie tomorrow. I'm confident the dialogue will be rational and measured.

Right now there are two bids, Rome and Boston. It looks like a lot of the other potential bidders, Paris/Berlin etc. may wait until 2028. Rome pulled out last time. Unfortunately, I think this shit might actually happen now that Boston beat SF and LA for the US bid. If Paris jumps in, we may get saved.

There are 24 months for other morons to get involved.

seems like cities have finally gotten a little smarter about how bad it is for a city / state etc to host.

which makes sense as to why were jumping in now

I was thinking about this earlier...

If hosting the games in 2024 fast-tracks the indoor practice facility, is it worth it?

I think that a lot of the bad things you hear are related to cities that have no capacity for it. Boston would be a nightmare in its present form, but at least there is some capacity there - public transportation (while terrible now) hotels (although not enough) major international airport (though a pain in the ass) existing sports venues.

I think they would have to pour money into certain things, but not as much money as other cities outside the US. And it does have the potential, if they do it right, to make Boston a world class city, because they will need to fix many of the things that now limit it.

In the end it's not worth the price tag and it has the potential to be a disaster if they half ass it. I also will be on vacation those two weeks. That said, it's not as horrible as other Olympics have been and it could have some benefits.

You are thinking too small. BC should agree to foot a portion of the 60,000 seat Olympic venue in Southie and convert it into a dome with filled in corners!

Would the dome be retractable? Asking for a friend.

PS - Personally, I would never do this, but you would make a killing on Airbnb were you to rent out your place while you're on vacation those two weeks. You know, if you're comfortable with that sort of thing.

I'll be out of my condo in the city long before then and was planning to keep it to rent - you can be damn sure I'm keeping it now.

I was thinking Hingham or Wellesley, not Lawrence.
