Pool play is not like the regular season. If it is, where are all the other teams? Pool play is the playoffs, and it is fucking stupid.

The analogy would be if the Pats, Ravens and Steelers and Colts played 3 games in the first round of the playoffs with no OT, and the Ravens go 2-0-1, Pats and Steelers go 1-1-1 and the Colts go 0-2-1. Ravens move on, first tiebreaker between Pats and Steelers is point differential, followed by who scores the most points.

The format is fine. It guarantees everyone 3 games, which creates a much greater incentive to travel to the host country and spend your pesos, and in general makes it more likely that people will follow the tournament for a greater period of time. As for teams themselves, Germany built a multimillion dollar training facility in Brazil for their team to use. No way they do this if it could have been one and done.

Also, the nature of the sport lends itself to this format. Many games end in a draw, even allowing for overtime. Thus, in a knockout tournement, penalty kicks decide who advances. Everyone, even FIFA, hates this. Group play minimizes this a bit. Half the teams get eliminated without there ever being PKs. If it were all group play, yes that would suck. But group play followed by knockout play is a fair compromise. When most of us were kids there actually used to be two layers of group play, and in its early years, there was no knockout rounds I believe. What we have now seems to be a fair compromise.

Had two: That in other sports teams don't lose in the playoffs and move on. Calling the group stage the regular season is dumb.

Get rid of penalty kicks and make them play until they score. If neither can score before the next day, kick both of them out.

This discussion is so stupid. How many times has an NFL team lost its last regular season game and still made the playoffs because someone else on the same day also did not win.

The NFL uses group play - they just call it the regular season. Teams play a fixed number of scheduled games, and than certain teams, based on their placement, make the knockout round, which we call the playoffs. The principal is the same. Because the NFL only has 32 teams which are all on the same continent (for now, see Jaguars, Jacksonville), and is not sharing their players with other competitions, they only need one level of group play, can play a greater number of games, and can finish it in 4 months. Because the WC has 100s of countries from all over the globe, and club play to work around, they create layers of group play, and extend the competition over the course of 2-4 years.

Since the Dolphins 4 decades ago every SB champion has lost at least one game along the way. And its almost always been true, I believe, that every WC champion has lost a game along the way. In both competitions, you usually can afford to loss prior to the knockout phase. Of course, once you get to the knockout phase, you can't lose, no matter how well you played previously.

Its stupid to hate one and not the other.

I have a beef with the tiebreaker rules. Head-to-head should come before they start counting goals.

this I agree with

I actually had no idea that head-to-head is not the first tie breaker. Is this because it does not work as a tiebreaker in a four-team round robin format?

No, they use it in other tournaments. It works, it only fails in a three way tie. But then you could move on to goal differential.

Some quotes from Ballgames favorite columnist:

The number of New York Times articles claiming soccer is "catching on" is exceeded only by the ones pretending women's basketball is fascinating.

Soccer is not "catching on." Headlines this week proclaimed "Record U.S. ratings for World Cup," and we had to hear -- again -- about the "growing popularity of soccer in the United States."

The USA-Portugal game was the blockbuster match, garnering 18.2 million viewers on ESPN. This beat the second-most watched soccer game ever: The 1999 Women's World Cup final (USA vs. China) on ABC. (In soccer, the women's games are as thrilling as the men's.)

Run-of-the-mill, regular-season Sunday Night Football games average more than 20 million viewers; NFL playoff games get 30 to 40 million viewers; and this year's Super Bowl had 111.5 million viewers.

No its not. You are relying on form over substance. The proper analogy is this - in the WC, the playoffs start on Saturday, when the knockout round starts. The fact that the "regular season" is played in the same country, under the banner of a singular tournement, is merely just different semantics, form, and logistics.

My sole point is this. Its fucking stupid to mock the fact that we lost to Germany and still made the knockout round, when we all know said persons will beat off until they are dry when their favorite NFL team makes the playoffs because some other team lost on a last second FG minutes after said favorite team took it up the ass 50-0 on the other side of the country.

I reject your false syllogism. So the #1 team in the world did not make the playoffs because of a three game round robin?

Oh, and how did Canada perform in the regular season? Do teams that don't qualify simply not exist? What if they qualify the next four years?

As I said in my initial post on this matter, the WC uses layers of group play instead of a single round of group play, due to the large number of teams, their geographic diversity, and limited access to players. Canada performed relatively poorly, failing to advance from an earlier round. Their failure to advance does not make the system stupid or not stupid. And they do exist, and they did participate. They just failed to advance. Maybe they will advance further in the next competition.

The #1 team in the world (Spain) did not make it to the playoffs, after advancing from their European Group (where they played home and home vs every other team in their group - 10-12 games if memory served me right). Its fair to be critical of the size of this last group and the volume of games (maybe it should be 4 groups of 8) but such is a different argument addressing a different point.

If your premise is that the group stage of the World Cup is merely another random "group" qualifier for the World Cup that is not based on regions, is limited to 3 games, is arbitrary in determining its members, is coincidentally in the same country as the "playoffs" and coincidentally finished 4 days prior to the "playoffs, and only involves the top 32 countries, then we agree to disagree.

It's the first round. Spain was upset in the first round.

Thanks for clearing that up.

All I know is that in this first round we only beat Ghana, which means we are now one of the top 16 teams in the world! So Ghana must be really good if a win against them counts for so much, right?

Hmm . . . something odd here - I checked the stats and Ghana did not win any games. It lost two and the highlight of their tournament was one draw. But our sole win againt them gets us in the door for the final 16.

FIFA sucks.

I don't have a problem with that, other than the fact that it is happening now. You want to call the WC a 16-team tourney and do the group stage 3 months ago, fine - play home and home round robin and take top 2 teams in the group. Finishing 1-1-1 and having the tiebreaker doesn't bother me - they were the second best team in the group.

No, my premise is that its fucking stupid to mock the fact that we lost to Germany but still made the knockout round, when literally all American sports provide for the same exact set up, and see it occur quite frequently. As long as its not yet the knockout round, its ok to lose, so long as you have won and/or drawn more games than the requisite number of other competitors or beat them in whatever tiebreaker rules have been set up.

In the NFL you can lose your last 6 regular season games, but still make the playoffs (knockout round), and play your first playoff (knockout) game 6 days later in the same stadium that you lost your last game. Somehow this is ok, but its stupid that we lost to Germany while also making the round of 16???? In college basketball you can finish 0 and fucking 16 in conference, and 0 and fucking 30 overall, but still qualify for your conference knock out round, and if you win that you go to the NCAA tourney, where you can be national champions. This, no one has a problem with though.

FIFA sucks.

Did Teddy ask you to join him in his argument, but only to do so as a fuckin retard. How did these 32 teams get to Brazil (other than on an airplane (rim shot)? Those games didn't happen. OH MY GOD, the Seahawks are the best team in the world after winning only 3 games. That is sooooo dumb.

if an NFL team loses a regular season game does that mean it wins the super bowl?

Pool play is not like the regular season. If it is, where are all the other teams? Pool play is the playoffs, and it is fucking stupid.

The analogy would be if the Pats, Ravens and Steelers and Colts played 3 games in the first round of the playoffs with no OT, and the Ravens go 2-0-1, Pats and Steelers go 1-1-1 and the Colts go 0-2-1. Ravens move on, first tiebreaker between Pats and Steelers is point differential, followed by who scores the most points.

whats your point

Had two: That in other sports teams don't lose in the playoffs and move on. Calling the group stage the regular season is dumb.

pool play isn't the playoffs. calling it as much is more dumb.

the idea of it being a bracket of 32, single elimination, is stupid.

So Canada was eliminated because they didn't play well enough in spring season/preseason?

No, although I admit to being clueless about how this whole World Cup tournament works. Now you're saying there was another regual season, before this group play "regular season?" Who knew? I thought the whole thing started in Brazil a few weeks ago. Didn't they just announce who made the U.S. team like a month ago? So how could they have already played a first regular season before this "group play" season? That "first season" kinda sounds like the NFL preseason, although from your posts it sounds like it counted and was used to whittle this thing down to 32 teams. Maybe that 1st "regular season" was more like the play-in games for the NCAA tournament?

This soccer stuff is really confusing. :shrug

Good point - any playoff format that results in that Ronaldo guy being out of the tournament this early sucks. That guy is so hot and bankable, what a draw for the fans!

It is like if the NFL came up with a playoff format that did not result in Peyton Manning at least playing a game or two - upsurd.

Definitely not his girlfriend. She loves soccer. She invites all 53 members of her immediate family over to 'wardo's place for gamewatches.
