ive got extensive experience but not at an open...i have heard theyre keeping attendence low for this one which is great for you...how i normally do it is this:

look at the pairings the night before and find someone in the am session that you really like who struggled through three rounds and is thus going of early and follow them for at least nine...then either continue with that group or hang out at a later hole 7-8-9-10 till another player you like whos struggling comes through and follow them for the back.

i really like that pattern because you get to see the whole course and then figure out which seating area you like best for when the later groups come through

for example:

2-3 years ago at TPC Boston (i go to this regularly but also have been to barclays and other ones): rory was one of the first off the tee (he was like +2 and the leaders were like -8) - followed him for 9 holes with a gallery of 10-15 people...he was chatting with the crowd, you really got to see how he and his caddy approched shots. it was really cool.

same deal with phil 1-2 years ago...followed him on the back 9 with a gallery of like 50 people and was 8 feet from him when he holed one from the rough on i want to say 12 from 150 out. it was awesome.

then keep in mind by the time you get back the top groups are usually teeing off or 2-3 holes into their round

then i just posted up at the cool par 3 on the back nine and let the top groups go through.

great days.

yes

it's up to you, actually. if you're a rascal riding powder bonesed tubby, you likely want to stay in one place - especially if you can secure two seats for your rotundness. if not, i'd suggest walking the course a little to get a feel for the place and maybe stick with leaders for a hole or two then follow some "less popular" folks to get a better view and feel for the game (without the masses of great unwashed shouting GET IN THE HOLE and other stupid shit).

lastly, i'll see if i can loosen some internet dollars from murt if you're able to meatbomb the proceedings at any point

Get there early, follow a group with a player you like that will finish before the leaders tee off. Then follow the leader group you like the best so long as it doesn't contain Woods, Tiger.

We did this at Bethpage - followed Faxon and Norman in the morning and picked up Mickelson on the 2nd. At Shinnecock, we sat at the ridiculous par three with the dome green in the morning and then walked essentially between Goosen's group and Mickelson's group for the 18. I found sitting at a hole for 3 hours tremendously boring, and watching the players between shots for 18 to be really interesting.

do people drink at these things?

also, how do rain saturated courses affect scores?

yes

as this is a shorter course, the rain will help the players as they don't need the roll as much as they need the ability to stop the ball like a butterfly with sore feet. look for LOW scores thurs and fri and attempts by the usga to homicide the players sat and sun when it (hopefully) dries out

less roll also will keep balls off the tee on the fairway instead of rolling into the rough

At least when my dad used to regularly go about 10 years ago, it was cheaper at Augusta to get a beer on the course than in the clubhouse. Fun fact which has no relation to anything outside of beer.

Never been to a PGA tour event, but I've been to a couple Nationwide events. They're lame. Know where the beer/cocktails are being served and don't venture too far from there.

The US Open is not a PGA Tour event. Just saying.

I thought Nationwide events were those car races in WalMart-y parts of the country.

you're correct - nationwide took their money out of golf in the tre/walmarty parts of the country to put it into the minor league nascar circuit. those races are typcially at the same track as the big boy races (and therefore BOTH nascars compete in the tre/walmarty part of the country).

the golf version is now web.com

Haven't seen 'em. Do they have hole sponsors this year? Which hole did MPC Computers get?

That happens to me with Red Sox games. Leave the window open, watch something else, wait for the roar of the crowd, flip over and see it happen before the 7 second delay. Makes 4 hour games tolerable.

Good for you.

The rest of us were talking about the Open, so why the PGA disclaimer?

Bryn Mawr - "Headed to a World Cup game, thoughts?"

Kind of hypocritical. I bring up tourneys that have all the same players and rules, but you need to make a point of correcting me on it. If you feel the need to make the correction then I'll just say I never said that.
