I don't know if they still do it, but 7-8 years ago at Camden Yards, they would put this maniacal looking cartoon oriole on the jumbotron whenever the home team was rallying. Cracked me up everytime.

I miss Camden. I'm on an IB-esque streak down there - only a couple home games in the last 5 years. But I've made it to Fenway for an O's game at least once in probably 10 of the last 12 years...getting in my second one this season this coming weekend.

They've changed the logo and uni so often in the last decade, you'd think their trying to recruit ess eee cee speed! I do remember a teeth-bearing version of the bird which didn't last long. It was creepy.

I have felt general support from the Sox faithful with whom I am acquainted. More a "show up the Yanks because we can't" than actual support, but I'll take it.

I haven't been since my sister graduated from Loyola a few years ago, but I made a point of getting to Camden whenever I visited her while she was a student.

I make it to Camden a couple of times a year. This year I went for the home opener and chuckled as fans around me discussed how this was the year the O'a would finally win the division.

15 in a row. Perfect time for a day off after 29 innings in two days. O's have the first wild card spot now - home field in that game is a big deal. That one game WC still scares the crap out of me.

They also called up their top pitching prospect Dylan Bundy yesterday. He's not yet 20 years old. I'd imagine he'll play a role similar to that of David Price that year he was called up and dominated from the bullpen.

Is it okay to admit that I am rooting for the Orioles, even when they play the Sox? That's an enjoyable team to watch.

No. But 16-2 in extra innings games is pretty lucky. So is 28-9 in one run games. And the bullpen has blown 18 saves. All this while having a run differential of only +11. They have a solid bullpen but it's not like anyone in there is dominant, the pitching staff is largely made up of a bunch of decent, not great guys and the offense is largely average.

To further the point on one-run games, the Rays have arguably a similar to slightly less bullpen as the O's yet were 20-26 in one run games. I have a hard time believing Pedro Strop and Jim Johnson are the reasons for this, especially considering Rodney is posting one of the best years ever for a reliever. Sometimes the ball just bounces your way.

I blame Brad Pitt and Jonah Falcon.

I was an Oriole in LL. This season has been very special for me.

IMO it has to be Trout but it is very new school vs old school in the debate.

I think both sides use arguments that are either wrong or unjustified, but ultimately I believe it is Trout.

Trout is clearly the best player in baseball this season. That said, I don't think that is an unjustified argument for considering for MVP, nor do I think "won the triple crown in propelling his team to the playoffs" is unjustified. Frankly, Trout is Ellsbury from last season - he won't win because of a ridiculous season by a guy headed to the playoffs, but he may deserve it.

I was referring to the "Triple Crown is so rare it's an automatic MVP season" or "Bill James' stat is the only measure of comparison that matters here" or "you shouldn't win MVP if your team doesn't make the playoffs". I'm sure there's more. Essentially the oversimplification of the players in order to make the oversimplifyer's argument the winner.

When you talk about new school vs old school, are you talking about the debate if you have to award to a guy who's team made the playoffs or the significance of the Triple Crown statistics?

I don't believe in an unwritten rule that you have to vote for someone whose team made the playoffs.

I don't think BA and RBI are among the most useful stats in assessing a player's value.

That said, Cabrera would get my vote. I respect the history of the Triple Crown, and Cabrera leads the league in OPS, too. It's a shame Trout wasn't playing (through no fault of his own) for most of April. That makes the comparison tougher.

And, in so much as it's possible to compare pitchers and positional players, Cabrera's season is far superior to Verlander's 2011.

Not even remotely. Trout had a slightly higher OPS, 10 more steals, and 20 less RBI.

Ellsbury ('11) .321 BA, 119 RS, 46 2B, 5 3B, 32 HR, 105 RBI, 39 SB, .928 OPS and 364 total bases, which is absurd.

Trout ('12) .324 BA, 129 RS, 26 2B, 8 3B, 30 HR, 83 RBI, 49, SB, ,958 OPS and 312 total bases.

Almost identical. Trout also struck out 139 times to Ellsbury's 98.

Ellsbury: 158 G, 732 PA
Trout: 138 G, 635 PA

So you can add more than 15% to all of Trout's "counting" stats to compare
