Jackson would pretty much give then 200 innings of league average pitching. Hard to really ask for more than that when you're offering an esetablished guy 1 year at $5M.

That's what they're rumored to do unless Edwin Jackson signs with them. They lowballed those two and were hoping that someone bit. Looks like Oswalt won't bite on the 1 year, $5M deal but who knows with Jackson.

Jackson would be a terrible error. Burnett level.

Well ones what $5/10 MM? The other was $82

Obviously it's not a money thing, but a "really, really not worth it" thing. He has a well earned reputation as a coach killer and this is a team that is attempting to re-shape the clubhouse. He has seductive talent but never puts it together, even in pitcher friendly ball parks in pitcher friendly divisons. Six teams since 2008. Yikes.

Let me preface by saying I don't know all the inner workings of the respective contracts but the Nats & Fish are quickly turning to the Minaya stage of overpaying for assets at their highest value

Nats:
Ryan Zimmerman: Giving a guy who is going to finish the season 28 years old between $14-18 MM per year through 2019 when he's going end 35. This is a guy when has missed some decent time 3 out of the last 4 years (2008: 56, 2010: 19, 2011: 61). He's a good player (I personally like watching him) & he might be the "face of the franchise premium" but in reality: He's extremely iffy defensively, he's hit .300 once, over 25 HRs once, & over 100 RBIs twice.

Jayson Werth: Signed through 2017 when he'll be 38 for $20+ MM starting in 2014 for a guy who has never driven in 100 or batted .300

Marlins:
Jose Reyes: When healthy he's one of the best SS in the game. But this is a guy who has missed over 190 games the past 3 years. He's signed through when he'll be 34 at over $20 MM per year starting in 2015
Mark Buehrle: A SP who is going to be 33 and has logged a ton of innings signed for nearly $20 MM per year starting in 2014 through when he's going to be 36
Carlos Zambrano: Who is one bad inning away from killing someone signed for $18 MM
Aaron Rowland: A guy who has decidedly sucked the past couple of years signed for $12 MM

Added to the fact that they have a good group of young players that are going to need to be paid soon. Hanley signed at $16 MM per year through 2014, Stanton, Johnson at $14 MM through 2014. And they are a team that can't draw flies even when competitive, though moving into a new stadium, should be interesting.

Werth was given one of the worst contracts in the history of baseball.

this.

At the very least, they jumped the gun when they didn't have to. He was under control through 2013. How much did they really save getting the extension done now? Or do they still feel like they need to demonstrate a commitment to winning to the fans? Does anyone still question them after the Werth contract, the signing bonuses for Strasburg and Harper, and the Gio Gonzalez trade?

Everything I've read about Zimmerman, as in all the results from the Google of "Ryan Zimmerman defense", has him as a plus to plus plus defender and most of the advanced metrics agree with that.

I'm not all up on the defensive metrics but I remember he couldn't throw the ball to first last year. That was funny, it was so deep in his head he had no clue what to do.

The 3rd Andrew Eugene Pettitte era will start in June-ish. Not a bad 5th starter.
