With 74 gone someone needs to pick up the slack, some big names out there this year.

Pujols
Fielder
Reyes
Sabathia
CJ Wilson

Obviously I missed some but thoughts?

I think the Cards re-sign Pujols, and the Yankees re-sign Sabathia at any cost. They just need him too much. Maybe Theo makes a run at Fielder in Chicago?

Sabathia-resigns with Yankees
CJ Wilson-Yankees

Yeah he won't be playing for the metropolitans anymore. It only takes 1 idiot GM to skew the market (see Jason Werth).

Are you pining for the days when Omar Minaya would be that idiot?

i don't expect Pujols back in a cardinals uniform...

his agent is looking for something like 200million / 6 years (that is an insane amount of money!) where as the cards offered 200million/9 years. it has been consistently proven that devoting a huge portion of your team's salary is :clownshoes (especially if they are not a pitcher.... gammons had a good article about this some time ago) so in a way it won't be the end of the world if he doesnt sign. it's a shame because if there are two players left that are "franchise" players- think of a team and you immediately think of that player then it would be jeter and pujols- one of them may not spend his entire career in that team's uniform. pujols is 31 and realistically his best days are probably behind him. he has a 3 year downward trend in stats (although he was injured this year, however) and he's susceptible to injury due to his age and his style of play.

I don't think there's any way Pujols gets more than 25 mil per year. I could see his contract being similar to A-Rod's about a decade ago, but not in excess of it.

The big question is if not the Cardinals then who? He plays 1B, which means Sox would have to somehow juggle the position with Gonzalez - seems unlikely. Yankees are good at that spot (Good being a relative term, but I mean, they can't just dump Tex.) So you won't have the two biggest spenders bidding. Cubs, Rangers, Angels, maybe the Mets, I guess (Of course, the Mets may be totally broke). Just a question of how much of a bidding war he can get going.

There is ZERO change the Red Sox chase either Fielder or Pujols with any legitimate interest.

Sox need to focus on a starter and building middle relief, and resigning Papelbon.

Sabathia already resigned with Yankees. That was quick. (THANK GOODNESS)

this makes absolutely no sense. he's a gold glove 1B (winning in '06, '10). why would you pay all that money for him to take 3-4AB per game?

He wouldn't be close to the best 1B on that team. People don't pay him for his glove.

My memory may be fuzzy, but didn't they lose 4-0?

Madson is a Boras client and looking for like a zillion dollars, which he'll probably end up getting.

Madson is pretty good too. the douche we signed might be ok for a year or two. Maybe we'll get a 2008 Lidge like year out of him before he reverts to declining. The biggest contract for a reliever ever might be overkill though.

I'd never sign a guy who punches* the hull of a small airplane as hard as he can every time he lost a card game.

Yeah but he essentially had a deal in place with the Phillies and Amaro was basically like "Fuck off, we don't have anything in writing."

I like Papelbon. I, like the Red Sox, wouldn't have given 2 seconds of thought to paying him what the Phillies paid him.
